Any idea what this temp sensor is for?

Hi all,
I have an 06 TJ X, 6 spd man, 4.0. It did not come with a temp/compas rear view mirror.

During the install of an after mkt mirror, I found an empty plug inside the grill, driver side nearest to the headlight. I thought it was for the mirror, but couldn’t find where it ended inside the cab. Installed the after mkt.

Today, I stumbled on the pictured sensor. It’s on the passenger side of the grill, and the wire loom goes into the passenger headlight bucket area.

Is this for a mirror, or is it for something else ?

Thanks
Ray

It’s for the factory Gentex mirror option that came on some later model TJs. The mirror has a compass and outside temp gauge built in. That is the temp sensor the mirror uses for its reading. I installed one on mine, it’s a 10 minute mod since your Jeep is pre-wired for it.

Thanks Chris, I did the gentex, and had hope I could use the existing harness, but couldn’t find it. Thought it came in the cab on the driver side.
Any idea where the existing sensor (pictured) comes in, so I can locate the end of it ?

Take the little long vent trim piece off on the top of your dash. Once it’s off, you’ll see an empty plug under it.

Then you need to purchase this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZUTNJ7W/?tag=wranglerorg-20

That harness plugs into it, then runs up the passenger side A-pillar and across to where it comes out on top of the mirror. You plug it right into the mirror and you’re good to go, simple as that.

Took me about 15 minutes to have my mirror up and running.

Its under the top defrost vent. Pull it off and there will be a plug and harness under there.

Yeah, I’ve looked for it there many times and never found it.

I’ll tear into it again next week, maybe it’s tucked in another spot under the dash.

Thanks again, if I find it, I’ll definitely go with the factory set up. Even though the after mkt works okay, I still prefer factory :)

Hmmm, if your TJ has the wiring for the temp sensor behind the grill, it should have the wiring up to the top of the dash. I'd take that trim piece off again and look for it, as it could have fallen down in there. To my knowledge, all the 03-06 models came pre-wired for the mirror.

I’m thinking the same, hope it’s there.......I ordered the secondary harness today :)

Well, you need that harness anyways, so that's part of it at least.

Here's to hoping the plug is behind your dash somewhere. Otherwise you'll need to source yet another harness, to which I do not know the part number for!

No problem at all, happy to help!

And yeah, I'm not sure if that would be a separate wiring harness, or if it's potentially part of the main wiring harness loom itself.

Any ideas on the blank plug on the driver side. It looks the same as a temp sensor plug.

Definitely not for drive lights, factory set up on those.

That's for this:

Mine was blank as well, but that plugs right in. That's the temp sensor for the mirror.

I was mistaken, I thought you'd already had one, but there are two. One of them is for unknown purposes, and the blank plug goes to the one I just linked to.

I have a 06 X, where can I buy the mirror?
Is there a part # ?

They don't sell it anymore. The mirror is a Gentex 221, part number GNTX-221. You'll only be able to find it at wrecking yards or eBay, and they are not cheap by any means (mine was $200, the going price).

Here's a few on eBay:

Like I said... $200 is the going price!

I bought my Gentex off Ebay, it came with a wire harness and sensor. It doesn't have the map lights on it, which was no big deal for me. I've tried to find the receipt for a part number, but can't find it. The stamping on the mirror is too faint to read, and can't make it out with photos either.....sorry...

Mine was somewhere in the area of 99 to a little over 100 dollars. Reconditioned maybe ?? not sure. It didn't take much searching on Ebay to find it, so they are there. The mirror works great, and it's auto dimming. Which leads to the next thing I figured out...…..I put the sensor on the driver's side and out of the way of the winch, so it would have free flow air.

I didn't want to drill a hole in the grill slat and cause rust down the line, so I used an existing hole near the bottom of the grill. Apparently (just figured this out 2 days ago), that particular spot caused the mirror temp/direction light to go dim all the time. I bought one of those household window safety clamps (very small one) and mounted it a few inches higher on the slat, and now the mirror lights are bright and clear for day use.

Hey thanks. If you ever figure out what that other sensor is for, let me know.

Ray

I posted something about it a while back and no one seemed to know for sure what it was for. It's definitely a temp sensor, but maybe it's an outside air temp sensor that the PCM uses for internal data or something.

Didn't think of that.....Thanks, good info. I'll try and find a wire diagram and see where it goes.....which in turn, will probably make me go...crazy.. :)
