Peak Crusing RPM?

LOL! But man is that kid annoying. I kind of like those tiny wheels better than 24" rims and stretched tires. :)

Honestly my biggest pet peeve is people who put giant wheels and stretch tires over them on a 3 feet lifted truck. Looks like absolute crap to me but hey it’s their rig right? Lol he’s annoying I just saw it in my recommended and thought of this thread!

OH most definitely appropriate for this thread... lol.
The fad here in NC is to have what I call saggy bottoms or what others call "your truck has to squat to pee". These kids (wow do I sound old) drop the rear of their trucks, looks dumber than heck and then add 22" chrome rims and low profile tires and you have a, well, you get the picture.
I was making fun of them one day and my wife said "You were a kid once too." and I said, yeah but I wasn't that dumb :)

Totally agree...as a “dumb” kid I restored and drove this 76 Camaro to high school LOL I can’t believe the crap some people do today!

Heres a 1970s shifter that gets it right. OD is not the next gear. 1st, 2nd, 3rd are gears to accelerate in and OD is just that overdrive to cruise in. Downshift to accelerate.

The big reason why manual transmissions are disappearing. Even the 4 cylinder JL only comes as an automatic. Is because the world has forgotten how to shift. Lazy or stupid, not sure which but gearing for peak performance, ie 3000rpm at 70mph in top gear, guarantees clutches will be obsolete is 20 years.

Did the world forget how to shift and "correctly" use overdrive or did the world begin to use overdrive differently than it did in the 1970's? My TJ isn't a 1970's vehicle.

How exactly are we supposed to use overdrive? A lot of us seem to be wanting it to be something it isn't.

Oh man it’s even better when they get a custom Instagram @ sticker. Then you can see how many of their friends have the same “dog rubbing rear on carpet” set ups. JoCo kids loves it’s so-called “squat”, just come check out the local Cook Out on a Friday night.

Well look at what the world is building right now. The Audi A8 hits 150mph in 5th gear and loses speed in 6th, 7th and 8th. Because OD is just that, overdrive to reduce rpm, emissions and gas consumption. Same with every other vehicle, automatic or manual, since the 1970s gas crisis made OD a standard part of every automobile.

The world knows exactly how to use OD. The people who don't understand are on this thread.

Yes, a few people want it to be something it is not.

Next point, what is the most efficient, strongest gear in your transmission? The direct gear, 3rd in both automatics, 4th in the 5speed, 5th in the 6speed. You want power, gear for direct, not OD which suffers from parasitic losses.

The world is definitely using OD the same as ever, and computer controlled automatics guarantee it. The more we perpetuate ignorance of the facts, the sooner clutches will disappear for good.

So cruising along at 75 in 6th gear with the cruise control set(which I couldn't do with the stock set up) isn't using od properly? When I need to get a little extra to pass, or take on a steeper grade, a downshift to 5th gear handles it with ease. I think a lot of people still believe that the 4.0 is a tractor motor and should run at 2k rpm. My mpg isn't that much different from when it was stock(16 stock vs. 14 now) but much of that can be attributed to lift height rolling mass etc. A smaller amount to gearing creating a 6-700 rpm difference at 75. When my LJ was in its stock form I found 6th gear to be pretty much useless. Downhill at speed, or the occasional flat section of highway. Now I spend 80-90% of the time on the highway in 6th gear. Again at 3150 rpm, but my jeep happily revs to 5k

I'll guarantee, that is the philosophy which will kill the manual transmission.

The thing I know about other more modern and more powerful vehicles I have driven is they can still get out of their own way on the highway in a reasonable manner without requiring a downshift into direct drive. My over geared TJ still doesn't compare in that ability. With the 5 speed/33s/4.88, I am still downshifting to make those reasonable moves through traffic. With 33s/4.10 I was working the shifter significantly more to complete with traffic and hang on to any change in elevation. At least now, I feel like the Jeep drives acceptably around town and on the highway.

I haven't been around long enough to know if the way we use overdrive has changed, but I paired 4.88 gears with the 42RLE and my ~32.5" tires and I am most definitely happy. I'm right at 2500rpms at 70 mph in OD. And at that point, I can push down the pedal and still have plenty of power left.

Before I switched the 3.73 gears for 4.88, I cruised at ~3000rpms in 3rd at 70 mph. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't a permanent set up. I wouldn't go back to 3.73 gears for any reason, and my transmission has had no problems since (105k miles).

Of all the reasons the world is moving away from manuals, why is that one that matters?
Because, reducing emissions, increasing fuel economy, ie reducing carbon load, is what is driving regulations which govern what gets built, and what gets licensed. And computer controlled efi and transmissions have the biggest effect. By arguing against the proven science, you guarantee the demise of clutches.

I love my clutch. I hate automatics. But I know my sons new Impezza with a clutch cannot match my wifes slushbox Crosstrek for economy or emissions.

I drive for a living. My favorite transmission is the Browning 5and 4. I have over a million miles shifting 18speeds. But I know the new heavy truck automatics are smarter than me even when I am at the top of my game, expecting to shift every 15 seconds. If you expect to hit 70mph and not shift for 100 miles..... You will kill the automatic, especially if you convince others you are right.

Anyone saying the best mpg I ever see in a TJ is 14mpg-16mpg is doing something wrong.

I drove 2000miles last summer, Kootenays to Salem OR and up the coast to Vancouver. I stayed under 60mph, 1950rpm..... tough to do on the Interstates.... but I got 20mpg. At 70mph I get 15mpg.

My '87 YJ, 3.07s and 33s did 25mpg at 70 in 4th. 2200rpm.

The TJ, especially the TJR was the dinosaur in the room.
The JK until the 3.6L in 2012 was another dinosaur.
The JL is stepping into the new reality, which started 50 years ago. With a turbo 4 and an automatic transmission. The new reality is here. Only 1 pickup is built today with a clutch. And only if you buy it with the base 5.9 Cummins. if you don't like my idea, tell me why/

with the 42RLE
That is the transmission of compromise. That huuge jump from 3rd to 4th really narrows the choice to get the best from 3rd and 4th. So yes, 2500 at 70mph a good spot with a 0.69OD ratio.

I'd love to know why Jeep came up with a 0.69OD ratio. I've never seen anything to explain the design process.
