What's the advantage of synthetic winch line vs steel cable?

it is called marketing. Hardly reflects what industry is using. Just shows they are trying. Maybe it is a thing in California. I have not seen any commercial use in BC. But for sure, someone is likely trying it. I'd like to see cost and life expectancy.
Why, none of that crap has anything to do with what we do with our self recovery winches on our Jeeps. What our uses are have been well fulfilled by synthetic ropes over and over and whether a helicopter benefits from a synthetic sling has just about zero to do with that.

Nevertheless, winches on Jeeps are used in a far different fashion than any winch used in the tow truck or logging industry. Winches on Jeeps are used far less often and in much different scenarios. The certain advantages that synthetic rope offers are more useful for the types of winching that the usual Jeep owner needs to do. Just because most tow truck drivers don't use synthetic doesn't mean that synthetic is worse for winching when it comes to Jeeps.
Exactly correct and thank you for sifting the rat shit out of the coffee grounds and pulling the discussion back to relevancy.

I'm sure deep sea recovery professionals use steel cable too, doesn't mean a thing for Jeep owners.
Except for that part. ;)
However, if you want a tidbit of fascinating info, look up what a catenary is and why not having one is important when towing a sensor array.

That was the only intention behind me posting the videos. Remember in the olden days when the off-road world was also very resistant to synthetic rope? Things change. Equipment improves. People eventually catch on.
Olden days? How old? Does Oct of 2000 count as the olden days?

That is how long I've been using synthetic.

yes steel cable is unlikely to knot.

Getting synthetic into knots has never been an issue for me...? The cool thing is that if it breaks you actually CAN tie it back together and finish the recovery.

yes synthetic hates the sun.

I know a few people in the sunny states who leave their line spooled up and sitting under the sun all year long with no noticeable degradation.

I am curious if insurance payouts change at all with synthetic.

If I were building a Jeep as cheap as possible I would choose steel every day. But most of us do have a little "fun money" to spend on niceties for our hobby.

I mean since we want to explore all the bullshit that doesn't really matter for what we do with our winches and all.

You still need to come up to the frozen north. We drill holes in the ice and fish with our winches. The big fishes with the teeth cut the synthetic lines. /s

Frozen braided wears quicker, some fairleads don't work well with braided, and it's kinda' femmie !
Wire is cheap, can be up-ended and re-spooled, not bothered by ice, and it's manly ! ;)
While I don't live or wheel in snow and ice much, I have used my winch at subfreezing temps many times and have never noticed any additional wear or any wear at all.

Sure some fairleads are detrimental to rope, so what, get the right fucking fairlead and protect your investment. That isn't a disadvantage, just basic common sense. As for the femmie part, again, a big so what. I don't define my manliness or lack thereof by which parts I choose to use to keep those around me and myself safer. If I have to wear a skirt to run synthetic, so be it, I'll start carrying one in the rig.

What makes you think that you can't up end synthetic and respool it back on the drum? Where do ya'll come up with this shit?

Maybe we oughta park our rigs side x side some day at the top of the hill on Jackhammer and see which one looks the manliest? I mean since that shit matters and all. I'll even bring my skirt.

Tow trucks and wreckers using synthetic ?

Yes

I'll stick with being a femmie, save 30 lbs on the front of my Jeep, not worry about being sliced open or busting a windshield, have easier/lighter free spool and not have that awful 4 steel roller poking out of the front of my Jeep. Femmie for me!!!

Goddamn, y'all come down hard on your positions. I love it :p

No ice fishing with a winch for me, thanks, so I shant worry about the big ones eating through synthetic lines

Now we're getting somewhere!

I'm switching to synthetic, and pink at that... My 4 year old girl will be thrilled 🥿

Dig around on the fishing sites. UHMW braided fishing line is an outstanding product.

Don't say that too loudly. Ricky has some stunning pink winch ropes.

I've actually been planning on getting one, just to fuck with the people that are susceptible to pink-winch-rope-fucking-withs. Also, it would go wonderfully well with my TJ's black-and-white color scheme.

There's even a cute pink one for @qslim

"If the man you're imagining in a skirt is your partner, you might think he'll look sweet, that the skirt will show off his best features. " ... yeah... ...this is getting sketch real quick...

Never mind...
