Starting without the clutch?

No remote starter and will most likely leave it.

The only reason I noticed was one night I went to turn the Jeep on to test the led turn signals I made and while reaching through twisted a touch too far...

I've found the starting in gear (1st/R) in 4lo to be very helpful a few times.

It was the clutch interlock switch and this is how they bypassed it.

It was in fact the clutch interlock switch. 20 minutes and a good amount of flexibily gets it done.

Did the PO have a remote starter installed? Many will bypass the safety switch... Not the best idea, you run the possibility of your jeep driving through the garage if you accidentally left it in gear.

I had mine in 4low once in my garage and forgot about the automatic clutch bypass. Immediate reaction was to stand on the brakes, which obviously cannot stop it in gear. I was inches away from disaster once I finally reacted by hitting the clutch. Almost got to test a 1/4" steel bumper against 2x6 framing, 1" plywood and a cinder block wall

Took a little over a week, he hit the remote start and thing drove across his lawn into a tree.

When the clutch linkage went out on my CJ5, I was still able to drive home, by killing the vehicle at stoplights while in gear, and then starting in gear. If there had been a clutch interlock, I would have had to fix on the road or get towed home.

He should have bought a good one. Mine wouldn't arm for remote start unless the clutch was out and parking brake on when the engine was shut off. 7 yrs, no problems until a valet broke the remote. We were staying at a hotel downtown and valet was the only option. It did work for a year or two after that (with me repairing it a couple times), but he mashed the button in, damaging the board.

Mine is an '06 and will not start in 4lo, without the clutch pressed in.

I believe only the Rubicon models came with that feature. Other models should have a bypass fuse instead

The 06 non-rubicons have a fuse in the engine bay box. It disables the clutch interlock and raises the idle.


You can bypass the clutch switch(cut/solder the wires together) on the 06 with no ill effects. Cruise/etc still work properly.

When I use the fuse, my 4wd light comes on too (some kind of reminder thingey?).

Correct.
The wiring diagram for that circuit in the FSM is wrong too. It shows that fuse shorting the clutch switch.

If the battery gets drained too low, it will revert to non-override, even with the fuse in.
