Dana 300: anybody do it?

Was just browsing some build threads elsewhere and saw that a good while back it was somewhat popular to flip a dana 300 for use in a tj. Just curious if anybody has first hand experience with the project. Seems like a decent idea as you could attain about 7-9" extra driveshaft length in the rear and thereby have better angles as well as an easy swap to 4:1 gears with an overall substantially stronger case. Add in the potential of a doubler in the middle for that extra low range while still gaining 2" or so over stock driveshaft length and on paper it sounds nice.

Thoughts, experience, or basically anything else just lay it all out.

I have a Dana 300 in my YJ with factory powertrain twin stick with cable shifters. I went to the 300 because it was very cheap to buy in stock form; $300. I also wanted twin stick and went with one tons. The front end is a chevy side drop so going with the 300 instead of the factory 231 was a no brainer. If you go 4:1 you wont need a doubler. Buyer beware: building a Dana 300 will get you close to the price of a Atlas transfer case.

What makes you want a 300?

Thanks for the replies guys! Jerry, I've read that thread before and was hoping to get a little newer info than that though just because i cant find a flip kit from a reputable dealer at the moment.
Fouledplugs, i'm just tossing the idea around right now because it would be a shorter overall package than the 231 as well as the added benefits of being able to twin stick it plus while it may not be the most practical option the choice of a 2.73 or 4:1 or 11:1 is appealing just to have whatever any given situation may call for. It's definitely not on the immediate to do list i'm just looking ahead at what is out there and possible.
if i could get the 4:1 231 kit anymore i might look at that but it still wouldn't allow twin stick as an option as well as the used 241j's are pretty pricey.
in all reality were i to actually go this route i'd be looking at a 300 flipped with twin stick and cable shifters using the 4:1 gearset to gain rear driveline length and a stronger case without going the $2500+ atlas route, it looks that a dana 300 can be done for around $1400.

Got my flip kit from Behemoth Drivetrain today and it looks amazing with twin stick cable shifters 770.00 plus LOMAX 700, Dana 300 sitting around 150.00. total 1620. Starting my build Tomorrow.

Oh and AA flip ring with new input shaft and bearing. 225 so total is now 1845.

Why did I go this route? I bought all the parts over time and spread the cost out.

the atlas 2 configured similar with 4.2:1 after tax and shipping came to 3381.

how was your experience with behemoth? everything arrive in a timely manner?

I run stock D300 guts in a Stak Replace-A-Case. I wouldn't run a flipped D300, they leak enough already. I've heard of doubling up the rail seals, but still have a history of leaking. Plus having cables under my front yoke seemed odd to me.

If you can get it to seal though, it's a good, strong little T-case. I have a flip ring for one (a couple in fact) that would let go for very cheap.

I will get pictures up. the rail holes are taped 3/8 -18 NPT and plugged. the Behemoth is a piece of art. Be patient with Jake and all your parts do get to you. The cables will be high up on top of the case and attached to the frame with plenty of slack not to bind.

This is a great conversion.

well it does look nice but im not sure how i feel when someone says to "be patient" with a company. If i wish to order any product i should expect it in an expedient manner without having to hassle the owner of the company repeatedly. I really wish he would partner with a more reputable company to get his designs out there because i would love something like this but after reading the pirate 4x4 threads on behemoth i'm pretty certain i wont be ordering from them. I am however curious to see a review of their products once you've had some time with them on the trail.

I wish i could find a replace a case for sale for a reasonable amount as that would be the optimal solution.
lately i've been searching for full specs or cad files of a dana 300 case in order to machine my own replace a case or to simply mirror a stock case and make it out of ar500 though i'm not having much luck.

I totally understand. It took me 3 weeks to get my parts but to me it was worth the wait. The machining is quality and Jake is a very nice guy.

I will post my photos on my build page as it goes together this week.

https://www.rustysoffroad.com/advance-adapters-atlas-transfer-case.html 2350 plus a shifter. I did the 300 flip in a YJ, it didnt shift worth a crap with a twin stick. For 500 more I would get the Atlas... I still have the 300, If I had something that needed a drivers drop, I would clock it flat and twin stick it for passenger drop. The atlas has much better shafts than the 300 and a 4.3 to one low would allow for better highway gears in hi and low is a good crawl ratio for off road. The 2.72 ratio of the 300 is ok if you need wheel speed. Either case is still better than a 231 imho so run what you want. Tim
Oh and the 300 will not clear a 727 in a passenger drop with the driveshaft, but it may in a drivers drop. 32rh is no problem...

A little late as parts started ariving weeks ago. Did you use the Behemoth flip kit?

There was no real kit 12 years ago, I used either novak or AA flip, which needed to replace the input to extend it to make up for the extra length that is need for the flip...

No, I still have one project left that I can use it on. Ebay is a good bet and car-part.com to see if there is one local to you.

Boeing sent me to China for next 6 weeks so build has stalled. I return end of April.

Steve the case turned out looking sick! I like the orange paint.

What made you go with aa outputs vs JB Conversions?
Are you retaining the 4wd light on the dash?

JB was my first choice and is beefier but not available . AA has good reviews so went with it on rear shaft. The LoMax and front output shaft is JB.
