Rearview Mirror Alternatives?

You are dealing with 2 fairly non porous surfaces. Super Glue dries from the outside in, so it weakens if you use too much, the adhesive on the inside attacks the faster curing outer adhesive.

Clean both surfaces with alcohol , use a few drops and you will be fine.

Ok, so after a beautiful weekend here I thought I would give another attempt at re-glueing my rearview mirror button back on and letting it cure in for 48 hours before installing the mirror back on. Once installed, I simply adjusted the mirror so I could see and the whole mirror and button just came right off again...wtf!

I'm so done with this mirror, now i'm convinced its my glass that is the issue. I don't know what else to think as to why it does not work for me. I bought the best glue, waited till it was the right temp outside, cleaned the glass, applied the activator, let it air-dry, set the button, let it cure for way longer than the instructions say (days longer), and still this thing falls off the moment I adjust it once.

Now i'm ok with no rearview, but is there any bolt-on alternatives that anyone knows of? I'm just curious at this point. I found this here but it says its only for CJ/YJ and i'm wondering if anyone knows if the footman loop in the top center of the TJ windshield is the same as older models?

How long did it take for it to arrive here in the states?
Is it comparable to the placement of the OE mirror?

I ordered it June 25th and it arrived Weds. July 3rd. It is a very basic mirror, plastic casing, metal stem, good reflecting glass. It is not the fancy glass like the OEM has that is darker and handles bright lights well at night. I'd say it is riding a little higher than the OEM but not much. It works perfectly. Here is another picture. And just a note, the wide side of the mirror is suppose to be on bottom. When the mirror came it was inverted as if it were going to mount on a dashboard, just needed to roll the stem around to the other side.

Good stuff man, and I have to ask...what was the reason you are not using you OE mirror on the glass? Was it because of similar reasons to me where I could get the thing to stay on my glass living in Florida? Just curious.

It kept falling off. I trail ride a lot and I guess the combination of bumps and hot sun took its toll. I finally got tired of gluing it back on. I took the time, cleaned the OEM with razor and wire brush, got all old glue off. Then spent the extra dollar on the better mirror glue kit, followed directions and didn't put too much glue on, just enough. I let it cure good, it lasted a bit, fell off again. I was done.

I'm glad I was not the only one this was happening to, I was starting to lose my mind a little. At this point i've gotten used to no mirror but i'm gonna get one of these I think as its nice to have. Thanks for finding this drill-in type, this was exactly what I was hoping for at the time.

I had the same issue. 4 times the mirror fell. Then the store had to restock. New batch. Worked the first time. Brake cleaner (the real chlorinated stuff) should cut through any film on the windshield. Just clean with alcohol after. Probably not needed, but after a bunch of fails I'd be anal about scrubbing the glass clean. That mount in the picture looks like a bit of angle iron that anyone could fab up with a drill.

I ended up going to a professional auto glass guy we use when we need a windshield replaced on one of our vehicles. He glued on the mount part to the glass for me with his adhesive and I haven't had a problem since. I think the stuff you get retail just doesn't do the job like the professional stuff.

Because my 35" spare tire sits so high a rear view mirror is useless. I just drive with my back-up camera on the whole time with the parking guides turned off.

As a 35 year auto glass business owner,all you need to do is use the (loctite) brand kit.what we use.

A 7" dash-mounted monitor. I can't complain. I got the monitor and camera for free.

Just fyi. I had my glass replaced. I think you can get glass with the black piece on the glass that the mirror affixes to or not. Get it without the black painted or sticker that the mirror affixes too. Otherwise when you move the mirror up your left with that black piece on the glass below your mirror. And it's a bitch to get off. Brake cleaner might work as mentioned above. But I did not try that prior to selling it.

And simply turning your mirror upside down gets you alot more movement upwards and out of the way if you are tall or trying to see above your spare.

I mounted my mirror to the top of the glass and turned it upside down. I got about as much upward clearance as you can get. But that mount that screws into the metal window frame above the windshield might get you a bit more.

Long time, all. Been fighting the good fight and now have some time to devote to continuing to get this thing together enough .

OK, so this essentially happened. The mirror mount came off with the mirror mount attached, along with a little shard of glass to which the mount had been affixed (leaving a chip in the windshield).

Hive mind:

Is this enough to claim a Safelite replacement?

If not (and the shop has tried repeatedly to glue it back), I guess taking the £40 hit on the shipping on £7 part is the best way to go? A $10 mirror for $64 all in isn't too much to spend to just be done with it I guess...

Glue it back on with 2-part clear epoxy. You'll need to tape it in place while it sets.
