TJ Noob with questions

Hey all,

I just got my TJ ('02 sahara) today and have a bunch of questions. I didn't get an owners manual so I am at a loss on some of these.

1) When engaging in 4wd nothing lights up on the dash. Is this normal? I haven't put in on jack stands but I hear stuff clanging around when I pull up the switch.

2) I was given two keys but only the factory key works. The copy will start the jeep but it immediately stalls out. This is scary because what happens if I lose my keys?

3) The jeep has factory fog lights on the bumper. How the heck do you turn them on? My old roommate had a TJ and I seem to recall there being a rocker switch. My jeep does not.

To turn fog lights on, I turn headlights on, pull out on stalk. My 02 has a 4X4 light on dash when in 4 wheel

The indicator should in the dash should light up. Make sure your linkage is hooked up. You shouldn't hear any clanking.

Is one key grey? Grey keys have the sentry immobilizer. You can get a new one though the dealer.

Do you mean the same way to turn the brights on?

I just turned on the ignition pressing the trip reset and the lights went through and lit up...not the bulb on the cluster

Is one key grey? Grey keys have the sentry immobilizer. You can get a new one though the dealer.

Test your 4wd dash light works by doing the dash self diagnostic. Press and hold the trip odometer reset and turn the key to the on position. If it doesn’t light up it will be a burnt out bulb. If it does light up, check the harness on the top of the transfer case. If all looks good it is probably a bad 4wd light switch (Crown p/n 8134473 for the NP231 transfer case).

No, not back but out. Hold but ween thumb and index finger and pull away from the column lime you are trying to pull the end of the cap off,of the stalk. Just not quite so hard. The cap will pop out a bit and turn on the lights.

Thanks. I tried the diagnostic and it lit up. It must be the harness. Where is the access? I crawled under and didn't see anything but its late/dark.

It is on top of the transfer case. It is pretty hard to see so just feel around for it. I think there is a YouTube video talking about it as well.

If you ground one pin from the harness (I forget which side) the light should come on. That proves the switch is faulty. It is a simple and cheap fix.

It is a sentry key. In order to have a spare, you will need to visit the dealer or a locksmith to have a new one programmed.

Thanks. I will go by this weekend. Any idea if they are expensive?

If you have AAA it may be partially covered. I lost my key years ago and had a mobile guy come out and cut/program 2 keys for me. Total was $200. So surely less than that.

I would type "automotive locksmith" into yelp and call some places along with the dealer.

I don't know what a dealer key costs but I had one made at a local key shop and was still kinda aggravated that it cost $45 when the non sentry key would have been $4.50.

Amazon has sentry keys for $8 on prime. My neighbor is a lock smith — I plan to ask him if he can do it for me, and I will get two made if he can.
