Colorado Krew Hangout

I bought an '06 LJ last fall and am bringing it to the Denver area this week. I live in San Antonio, but I'll be spending a fair bit of time in Colorado since it's my original home. I just wanted to say Hi to the Denver-metro folks and anyone in the San Juans.

It's going to be garaged in Centennial, but hopefully above 10,000 feet as much as possible.

I've been doing minor work on the jeep (rotors/BMB pads, new thermostat, spark plugs, gas tank filler neck fix) and it's ready for light-duty off-roading, but I plan to upgrade a few things.

It's on 33x12.5's right now with a spacer lift; everything else is stock. I don't plan on rock crawling, so I'm planning on staying on 33s. I would like to get rid of the spacers and get the same height with springs. I'd rather keep as much hardware stock as possible for now to keep the cost reasonable. I'm also considering a regear from the 3.73 and adding lockers.

I contacted two Denver shops (Edge and Dusty Dog) for quotes. Dusty Dog put one together quickly but it's way more than I want to spend, and Edge never came through with a quote at all.

Any thoughts on these shops or other recommendations?

Edge is probably getting into their busy season with builds. If you can, I'd try them again. Chris, the owner, is a real stand up guy and will walk you thru what you need.

There is High Country 4x4 just down the road from Edge (literally, maybe 1/2 mile). I dont know enough about them and want to say their labor rate is a bit high from what I recall. Also, there is NorthRidge 4x4, but I know of a couple people who stated their labor rates are also high and one individual had their shims fall out into the diffrential (meaning not enough preload) when he swapped axle shafts.

@TRevs - if you plan to be on a 2” lift I may have springs to sell you. I’m thinking of going to 4” and may part with the 2” OME HD springs I put on less than 4,000 miles ago. Just a thought that could help us both out :)

Oh man, @TRevs if you don't want them I will!

I'm actually in a pretty similar situation build wise, so I totally get wanting to loose the spacers for suspension at the same height. Welcome to Denver!

That might work; are they the heavy springs that people sometimes refer to as 2.5"?

What tire size are you running now with them?

These are the HD springs, so most guys net around 2”. Add in a body lift and I’m on 295/75r16 (33s). I do have a spacer up front to correct the rake with the heavy winch.

APRIL PHOOLS 4/4/2020

@Colo-TJ made the official announcement on the other forum (Chad, hope you don't mind me spreading the word here).

As usual meet up will be at the Gunsmoke Truck Stop 9 AM and leave by 10 AM.

The harder run is Chinamans Gulch. Requirements are as follows (just like in October), TJ, YJ, CJ or other short wheelbase will need a minimum of a 33" tire and ZJ, XJ, JK, JL or other longer rigs need 35" tire minimum. At least 1 locker is recommended. Body armor, rock sliders, and any under body protection (raised skids really help!) is also recommended. Sway bar disconnects are also required or something similar. This trail is getting harder so what you might see in previous post or other sites may not be up to date.

Rookies are welcome but you MUST listen to your spotters as they will know the trail the best. If there is something you want to try, we'll spot you thru it. Anyone spotting won't put you in a situation where you are not comfortable. We have a good group of folks, so prepare yourself for some light ribbing as well.

There is usually a group that runs the milder trails in the 4 mile area, I am not sure what these trails include but typically there is a seasoned veteran that leads it. Once I figure out who that is I can post the info here too.

These are all day trips. Bring food, water, plenty of clothes for any type of weather. Bring your tool kits, first aid kits, good shoes. Be prepared for anything. Make sure your rig is up to par--an issue on the trail can make the long day longer. Expect some level of damage. Things can happen, and we'll be there to help you, but please make sure everything is ready on your rig (control arm mounts, shafts, ujoints, etc..) and bring tools!

This seems to be more of the jibber jabber thread. So I'll post this over here. ;)

Do you guys think this trail would be a good shake down run for my red LJ? I'm not looking for hard core while I break everything in so it sounds like it could be a good match. April 4th may be perfect timing for me and while CO is a little far would be nice to get so much street time in my Jeep too. If you guys think I'm better waiting for a different or more scenic trip let me know.

It is still dependent on getting the shocks tuned and having the remote filler neck installed would be convenient if I'm stopping every 3 hours to gas up.

It would and you should. Chinaman is a good moderate/difficult trail. Right next door in the same parking area is Carnage Canyon, which might be one of the closest things we have to JV out here.

Want to try out those 35s after Chinaman?

Absolutely. As Josh said it is a good moderate to difficult trail. It offers plenty to test rigs. C'mon down!
