A TJ sized camper

Ain't that the truth! I had a 1968 Scad-A-Bout teardrop that we towed behind our '90 Toyota 4X4. Folks in big, beautiful Class "A" RVs would come up to us quite frequently to ask about it. They're a lot of fun, to be sure. Ours was affectionately called "The Conception Wagon". We did a 3-day camping trip, and 9 months later welcomed our son into the world. :sneaky:
Twice we had people signal us to pull off the highway so they could take pics and ask questions.
Once we were startled by an early morning visitor snapping pics.
It was a conversation starter.

Has anyone tried putting a truck bed camper and setting it on a small 4×8 trailer?
It seems like a good idea in theory. But so does getting remarried 😱

I’ve seen it done in Alaska. But I am not sure what the advantage is. You’re still going to need a truck to tow it.

This one's a little larger, but still smaller than a TJ. It's a work in progress, the interior isn't done yet.

Prior to the photos above it looked like this, the "cabin" above is modular and removable so it can be used as a simple pop-up like this too:

You're telling me! I remember seeing motors for that rear crank but I looked again a few months ago and didn't find anything. I should probably keep it as is, the cranking has to be good for me lol.

What about taking off the handle and simply using a drill motor. Showed a friend this and he has used it ever since

I used to do that with a big 20v battery powered Craftsman 3/8 drill but it would burn up after 12-15 times doing that. Sears would replace it under warranty then they stopped making anything that big. I haven't found anything in my price range (I'm retired) to do that so I crank it now. I keep looking, maybe I'll break down and just spend the $$ for a big Milwaukee or similar quality.

This is very similar to what I keep envisioning for that I want to build as well! Love the setup! Is that a roof top ac/heat system? How is it powered?

-Grant

yeh, roof top reverse cycle ac weighs 30kg. It’s mains powered so for caravan park use only unless we do outback touring where you’d get a petrol generator to run it. Off grid I’ve a 12 volt fan installed.

My use of this will be a mix of all of the above so fits my needs perfectly.

Ok forum members. Jerry has probably helped most of us at one point or another. Can we help him with an automatic tent raising device? I'm thinking we need a gearbox around 10:1 that can handle the torque and then he can use any drill he has as a motor. I've used reduction gearboxes before but I'm pretty sure somebody else here is smarter than me. Thoughts?

Thank you for kind thoughts but I'm good, even if I decide to keep things as they are. Good exercise at the least lol.

I've been debating getting a little guy trailer and lifting it, and putting matching wheels and tires to my TJ on it!

You might like what this guy did to his Little Guy. He has several videos on the process but this basically the end result. He eventually took it a bit further.

I'm curious about how much range you lose when towing. My 4.0 with a 5 speed normally gets 215-230 miles per tank. What are you guys with teardrops and other trailers seeing compared with your normal range?

I'll have to check it out this evening!!! I'm minutes away from having my diesel swap running for the first time!!!

I would imagine that would be factor but it might also be a great time to look into a diesel swap, more torque, longer range
