Wondering if anyone has installed hood vents on their Jeep.
I know it is said that the cooling system is adequate on our TJ's but when I open the hood after driving it's hotter than hell under there. The engine may be OK but what about all the other stuff under the hood? Wouldn't some venting help?

When I restart my Jeep after running into a store (not running A/C) it runs rough for maybe 10 or 20 seconds then smoothes out. I performed the service bulletin and wrapped #3 injector as well as #2 and #3. I have found that running non-ethanol fuel helps. The temp gauge stays right at 210 maybe creeps up a little on my well maintained 75,000 mile 04 TJR and I recently replaced the coolant. One flush with distilled water ran clean. Don't mean to ramble just trying to give all the info.

Howdy
Since your exposed to hotter climate , I’d suggest to install a 195 thermostat for starters
-we have hood Louvres on our LJ, but they were already installed when we purchased the Rig
- no big deal to install them yourself

I prefer the 210 thermostat myself, since we’re experiencing 7 months of winter up here in

I think @jjvw experimented with various engine temps and thermostats and has some good experience to share on what does and doesn’t matter, if any.

Only that on mine with both a cowl intake and hood vents, the engine temps never exceeded the mid 190s with lots of time in the 180s when warmed up. Several years ago, I switched to a 205 thermostat which brought the temps up onto the high 190s low 200s.

Hotter than hell is a big thing to us humans but not to anything that lives inside the engine compartment.
I just wear gloves when opening the hood now. The prop rod is not your friend on a hot day.

Soon, I’ll be adding an air chuck external to my engine compartment for this reason.

Because I have a V-8 in my TJ and had high underhood temperatures I installed GenRight hood vents on my TJ.

I just bought a fiberglass hood in the AEV style with the vent near the radiator.

I also have one of the Poison Spyder hood vent panels that I am going to install on my daughters TJ.

The only value to adding vents I can come up with is the very long term preservation of the plastic and rubber parts in the engine bay. But I'm referring to accumulated deterioration that won't matter for many years in the future.

Your V8 operates hotter than the 4.0's 210?

The modern Dodge magnum V-8 runs at 210* just like the 4.0 but my underhood temps were higher due to the headers and because of the size of the engine. Having the hood vents DID help lower the felt temps. Did it REALLY help? I have no idea as I didn't have a way to test it at the time.
Once I get the TJ running again I can try to do a little testing as to if they really help it not. I had bought a new stock hood for the Jeep before I came across the AEV style hood.
Louvered hoods have been used in the Hot Rod realm for years to help get rid of underhood heat.
As jjvw said I think it might help more with the preservation of the plastic and rubber parts. No I don't think it has any affect on the coolant temperatures at all but that isn't the only concern is it?
When I added mine I was trying to get rid of some of the heat that was coming thru the firewall from the V-8. And as I said yes it did seem to help some.

And as has been pointed out some of JUST LIKE the look. I like the look of the Poison Spyder panel on the hood as well as the GenRight panels. I even had some for the sides of the hood that hadn't been installed. But I might just add them this time around.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

A V8 with a set of long tubes gets incredibly hot under the hood. The engine might run around the same temp as a 4.0, but the under hood temps are way higher.

And block huggers are just as bad.
It's why I asked about getting them ceramic coated or wrapping them but since I live in the PNW I'm not really hip on wrap on the headers.

I just installed the Poison Spyder hood louver. Mostly to hide the nasty dent smack in the middle of my hood. We'll see if it makes any difference. I normally run just a tick over 210 on the guage in the summertime. It gets kinda warm here.

The vents really aren't to help with coolant temps but to help with the underhood temps. Should be interesting to see if you notice any decrease in your coolant temps.
