Rear bumper with tire carrier recommendations

Don't take it the wrong way, I really like the design. I really just wonder long term how the tub is going to hold up with the extra weight. I know it took a long time for the slider designs to really get ironed out and part of me thinks this could be a similar situation where there are long term issues that "might" pop up. Nothing wrong with looking at the big picture or the long term right?
I'm not taking it the wrong way, no problem. My tub damage didn't happen until I regularly started carrying the kitchen and related weight on the drivers side, and I've been driving this Jeep on trails for 9 years, all of which time I had the Exogate installed. I average 250 or more trail miles per year with this Jeep and every year there are a few hard slams down on ledges but until the extra weight of the kitchen there was no tub damage on either side. Over the years I've carried a lot of things on the Exogate, I've posted about some of the Exogate accessories I've designed, built and used, and no damage from those either. I think 9 years under the conditions I've used this Jeep is a pretty good long term test :).

I’m currently running a Poison Spyder bumper and tire carrier. Because I had to carry a spare on a group event I went on last year. It has been so excellent I have left it on. Solid, no rattle what so ever easy to open and close. Lockable, tire height adjustable and I’ve got a 37” tire on it. I can still see out the rear window. It’s a nice bumper and carrier. I will be selling it however as I’m removing the spare again and since the kid is now driving on his own he no longer wants to go anywhere with Dad. So I’ll just throw the spare inside if I ever have to have one. I usually leave it locked on the trailer.

Agreed. I've had my Jeep 13 years and I think carefully about stuff that would damage the tub. I've grown attached. At the end of the day your tub really was smooshed and I would be pretty unhappy if I suffered similar damage.

I think of my Jeep as a rolling laboratory for all of the things I design and considering the amount of abuse I've put it through on all the trails over the years the and considering that the only trail damage that has ever occurred is that slight distortion of the tub near the rear drivers side mount, I not unhappy.

Oh wait, I almost forgot one more bit of damage, once I slid back on a wet bit of steep slickrock and jammed the end of the exhaust pipe on a rock and bent it, so the aforementioned tub damage isn't the only trail damage ever to happen. I replaced the slightly bent tailpipe with one I had a local shop make so that the tip wasn't below the crossbar of the hitch, now new new pipe is out of harm's way :).

But after 190,000 total miles, lots of annual trail miles and testing many new designs and products on the road and trail I can't complain about the condition of the Jeep.

Did that on mine too, I really enjoy all your projects and enjoy hearing your perspective on it. After all you designed at least one of the things this thread is talking about. I hope you didn't mind me mentioning you, I appreciate the fact you take the time to talk about it.

Always glad to talk about my projects :)

@jscherb keep those designs coming and let us know when we can crowdsource a group buy! Great designs for our TJs
Thanks, glad you like some of what I do :). Usually I don't do anything commercial myself with my designs. If a company expresses interest I sometimes turn the design over to that company for production, but I did arrange a short manufacturing run for a group buy one time. Mostly I just design this stuff because I enjoy the design process but if there's something I've designed that a group of people is interested in I'd be happy to explore the idea of a short production run for a group buy.

I have heard good things and bad things about DirtWorx and I have heard that the "rattleproof" setup is not always rattleproof. They are American made I believe which is always a good thing. I don't know much about the JCR offroad one but I think they make one that mounts to the bumper and the tailgate making it a single opening instead of a double. Not sure on that but you can do your research. Either way a bumper and tire carrier is going to be heavy but it all depends on your preference maybe you don't care about dragging the extra weight around.
As for the strength of the Exogate im not sure because I have never used it but im sure somebody on here can give you some insight on that.
I have the dirt works rear carrier , it does rattle a little on rough roads. Other than that the build quality is great and the price is good to. I have the rear carrier that is able to carry 2 5 gallon Jerry cans and a cargo rack.

This what I currently have. It is cracking right at the top of the upper bracket. I have had it fixed once, I'm ready to move on from this.
What bracket? The outside one above the taillight? Did you install the internal brace that ties into the rollbar?

This should probably be tight?

See the crack?

Does yours fit tight? I can shake that tire pretty good. It does move. Other than the damage it is doing, I like it pretty well. Maybe the rubber bumper needs replaced?

Thanks in advance.

Jeff

Definitely extend your bumpers a touch. That will keep anything moving even a minute amount.

My upper link has play in it, and I know @strumble8 also had this issue. He put another nut on his and said it removed any play he had. I've been meaning to do it too, just havent yet.

I have the Dirtworks bumper and tire carrier. I had a rattle coming from it, but I put a piece of cork gasket on the lower surface of the swing arm catch, and it got rid of the rattle. Even on the shitty northern WI roads.

We ran the bestop when it was my wife's daily driver and the kids were little. It's convenient with just the one latch. I installed and adjusted per the instructions and had the same exact cracking as the picture (33"). The bestop was ok but not really a heavy-duty trail set up. I swapped over to an OR fab when after my son started driving it and we have been happy with it. The extra latch is not a problem and the OR model holds everything secure with no rattles.

With the Morryde (or equivalent) setup; would you need an aftermarket 'bucket' that the tire actually mounts to? The Morryde for example does not include one with their reinforcement kit. I still have the stock mount in the garage, would that work for a 33 (or 35) ?

I'm using the stock mount both on a 33 and now with a 35.

I’m wanting to either buy a Genright tire carrier or build another one. I had made one and it was used a few years but wound up selling it to someone that just had to have it as I didn’t care for the mounts I had done. Here is a pic of the one I made a few years back. I also thought about making something like the TNT customs one possibly. I have a drop down tailgate instead of the swing out style.

I've been very happy with Garvin EXT tire carrier with bumper. It has held up strong for over ten years. Not cheap at just over $1,300. It's f-ing quality, though. I have a tab welded to the center of the tire plate that I use for a rear camera. It can easily be used for lights. Or, if you get the cargo carrier add-on, you can attach to that.
