Need opinions on this 2005 Rubicon

Tires are both cupped and out of balance but not terribly either. Just cheap ass low quality aggressive tread low tech mudders. I'll put some quality tires on and it will make a big difference I am sure of it. Ill check all the joints and bolts underneath either way.

Small things like cupping and out of balance makes a massive difference on these short wheelbased rigs, don’t kid yourself!!! But yes, check everything. I found my rear track bar loose.

Also, having had many sets of KO2’s....don’t think they are miles above mastercraft tires. BFG’s have taken the most weight to balance out of almost all my tires, and my current cheap chyyyuna tires on the TJ to balaance out I do love our KO2’s we have on the Runner but...just know going in. 👊

Agree, I can fix most of the issues for parts cost myself. I get a smokin' deal on tires. I'll have it sorted quick. Talking of going to Disney OK with friends this weekend. Got to have it ready for a road trip by then.

Sounds like you picked a nice TJ, congrats!

You'll definitely enjoy it.

Have that same tire on LJ I recently bought although about 50% tread. Rides smooth and relatively quiet for lifted Jeep with off-road tire. I’ll be switching but that is because want to go to 35s, not because of the tire.

Could be just perspective on my part coming from a super smooth and quite truck. Its totally stock and hasn't had its first oil change yet. Most of the off-road stuff I have driven has been off-road only. Recently was in new JL's in the mountains in Vermont in the snow, awesome trip. Drove Baja Challenge race cars in Nevada a few years ago cross country with Zero One. Lots of stuff in between from Jeeps to RZR's but not much long haul highway on MT style tread. Could just be conditioning on my part, but I want new tires anyway, and I have stimulus money to burn. Just need to decide what to buy. Will probably toss the Mastercraft's on Craigslist or FB Marketplace for beer money.

The bumpers are body armor, they are very heavy. The rear probably has integrated gas can mounts.

It seems to be able flip down after you swing it away. Got home late, need to look at it more. Seems well built. Looks heavy too. Catching up on working threads here for now.

Mine had Firestone’s on it. Looked fine. Went 200 miles with death wobble, shaking, all over the road. In snow covered roads.

Replaced the shocks, which were so done they had no oil or pressure left. Tires were 15 years old so rock hard and done.

New tires, shocks and the thing was GTG!!! Not like my loaded F150 that is stock smooth, but best it can be. Good luck!!!

200 miles with death wobble makes my little trip sound tame. The pucker factor would be high no doubt.

So here is the verdict. Runs great, shifts great, clutch feels fine. Goes into 4H and 4L no problem, both lockers engage and disengage easily. No fluid leaking other than some small oil weeping, probably rear main but not enough to fix yet for me, no drips just damp. All fluids checked are the appropriate colors and level. No diff leaks, but I see RVT so maybe serviced recently? I will check diffs and t case tomorrow. Finger in all the frame holes revealed no grit, no flakes, just smooth virgin metal. This thing is virtually rust free in all points I could access. Under carpet nice and clean no rust or damage. All the lights and accessories work, cold air, hot heat. Runs right at 2500 RPM in 6th gear at 65mph and sounds like a pack of attack helicopters is chasing me. The tires are HOT GARBAGE. Has 33x12.50R15 Mastercraft MXT and they are terrible. Fronts like new, rears 75% but they have got to go asap. Replacing with BFG KO2 or KM3 haven't decided yet. After some negotiations got the dealer down a grand and drove it home for $15k out the door. Here's where the fun starts.

A mile or two down the highway the HVAC was set to AC dash vents and suddenly changes to defrost vents. No worries, drive for a while and stop for gas, I find the vacuum line hanging off the manifold. A new rubber elbow fixed that issue for a few bucks. At the same time I smell coolant and see a puddle under the Jeep, not good. Investigation finds the upper radiator hose is missing its clamp. Clamp found dangling from middle of hose. Probably from when they replaced the valve cover gasket at the dealership. Could have been worse. Fixed that for free with some borrowed channel locks at the parts store. Topped off coolant and drove 225 miles home. This thing drives like a riding lawn mower. Steering parts are all new and tight but it does not want to stay on center. Feels like occasionally the rear is steering too. Could be some worn suspension bushings. Its not terrible, I can keep it in a lane at 70mph but I am not used to it. I drive a 2019 Ram for my DD so this is a change. Knowing its a 15 year old lifted Jeep I am not worried. I will dig deeper tomorrow. Plus I need to work on normal used car preventative items like belts, hoses, etc. Good time for me to get familiar with the Jeep my wife has affectionately nick named "Booger". Hope that one doesn't stick.

Oh, forgot, it has a working Warn M8000 under the cover on the front. Controller was in the glove box with the owners manual and some repair receipts from the past owner.

Can I join your club now?

Curious why you don’t like the MXT tires? I recently bought an 05 that came with fairly new 33” MXT. I’ve had the Jeep up to 70mph and for a 15 year old lifted wrangler, I didn’t feel like anything was abnormal.

My main use for my wrangler is off-roading as it’s a second car to my 19’ Silverado 1500 so I will likely keep the MXTs because I would think they’d be better off-road when compared to the KO2 or other ATs

Congrats! I have to go back on my earlier reply. I overlooked the Rubicon part! Thats a hell of a deal at $15k. welcome to the very small club of LJR owners!

They might be better off road than many AT's, depends on the terrain I would assume. Mine are old, I haven't checked the DOT but they have some weathering so I assume they have hardened up some. They also have not been rotated regularly so they have irregular wear which is compounding the tire noise problem. It's probably a much better tire new than I am giving it credit for due to my limited experience with them. I am also super brand biased. Everyone is in some regard. I have friends that like Nike, that's ok with me, but I don't. It doesn't mean they suck. it just means "I" think they suck. If you had good experiences with them, that's awesome. Buy what you like.

TJR not LJR. I would have loved to have an LJR, just couldn't find a clean low mileage example coast to coast for my budget. Yeah, yours is longer, jokes on me.

First off. Fuck Nike. I live his state, have family that works for the Ducks...yeah.

And the LJR’a are good for mods but...I REALLY hate the looks. They do not look classic to me. My opinion!!!!

I agree with the rest and....I paid that much for a TJR a year and a half ago that is very similar. You did good man.

Little update. DOT date code on tires is 13th week 2015. Could be part of the issue. Found some slightly cracked rubber in the front upper control arm bushings and rear sway bar bushing totally gone. Ordered parts for all to be replaced. Found a sticker on the rear control arm with part number 94001132 and a date of 9/20/18. Looks like it is a Rough Country kit on here.

Reading posts like this make me feel better about the deal i got on my Rubi. Even if i had to replace the fuel pump a week after i bought it and now a month later I'm looking at replacing the catalytic converter...Nice jeep tho, and Booger isn't that bad a handle for it.

🍻

I recently bought one with 220,000 miles for $12,000. So far I love it but the price tag of what I want to do to it is astronomical. I need onboard air and a regear ASAP. Then a big brake kit, front fenders, under armour, etc.

Found some time to work on the Jeep today. Check engine light came on this morning, P0431 code for catalyst warm up bank 2. Banged the pre-cats with a rubber mallet, no rattles but the whole exhaust had a lot of movement. Found bank 2 pre-cat bolts loose to header flange. Tightened those, pulled the battery cable off for a while to reset and no more CEL at least for now. Had the wife run the steering back and forth while I tried to see what may be contributing to my slight wander / bump steer. Brand new track bar was loose at the ball end. Good technicians at the ole stealership I picked this thing up from eh? Also found a drop pitman arm was installed at some point. Going tomorrow to the shop for 4 new KO2's and a caster camber check. Will have them swap out the drop pitman for OE while they check the specs on the front end. Also order $500 worth of stereo gear per several threads here. Not the exact same setup at Chris and ScottB but close. Two sets of MB552's with adapters for the front, a Kicker 6.75" for the stock console location with a compact 300w amp that should give it a workout, plus a JVC head units. All from Crutchfield with all the hardware to install for under $500 not bad, I spent 4x that on a mild system for my boat last year. Should sound much better than stock, cause it sucks right now, zero bass and not loud enough with MT tires. Next on my list is tools, recovery gear, and critical spare parts for the trails.
