1999 TJ Custom 4.9 stroker

Ok I'm probably gonna buy the apex because it's a controller and the megasquirt is actually a mounted box and you have to take it apart and hook it up if you wanted to change settings correct...? Also have you ever heard of anyone hooking up an aftermarket engine oil cooler....?

Yeah, you'd like the Apex. I remember how easy it was to adjust.

I've never seen anyone personally do an oil cooler.
 
6" stroke? You might want to check on that.
I agree, stock 4.0 is only 3.44" and stock 258 is only 3.90"... more likely the builder is offset grinding it for a 4.0" stroke. That would give ~296 cu. in. (4.84L). FYI, a 6" stroke would be ~443 cu. in. (7.3L). Hello, broken everything... haha!

Oil coolers can be a good idea, depending on the style and how / where it's installed. I'm only familiar with them in on-road use, so lots less things to worry about like mud, sticks, water crossings, etc... Is there any concern with the actual cooling system itself? Seems like the stock rad might be a little undersized at that point too.
 
Yeah my motor guy wants me to run a oil cooler or at least look into getting one because with this set up he wants to take every precaution we can and try to make the motor last as long as possible

That's good advice. It's a high performance engine, so I would do the same thing.

Question though: Why didn't you just opt to swap in a V8? I suppose it would be more expensive (probably around 7-10k to do right), but it's a popular swap.
 
For one with all the money I already have into it I don't want to spend the money and also if I was to do it I'd have to do all of the work myself just like I did with the restoration I wanted to be able to say I did everything down to the paint as of now the only person to work on my jeep is Doug building this new stroker

True! However, the V8s are lighter than the I6 engines. So with the Dana 60 axles, it might come out even.

I get what you're saying though!
 
And my machine guy is saying with the compression and all the other stuff we're doing should be around 400 hp I know that titan advertising their 4.9 monster stroker at 320hp this motor he is building now is ridiculous I put that first motor together myself it was my first build and even Doug who has building engines his entire life said it wasn't anything I did during assembly he said it's just shitty machine work them guys did. But anyway I should be getting small block v8 power anyways so why do the swap

Not to be Debbie Downer, but 400 hp sound awfully optimistic. Maybe with forced induction, but normally aspirated will need head work, and a pretty stout camshaft, and you're going to have to make that play nice with the ecm controlling the fuel injection. You can go with a carb, buts that's another bag of snakes.

I agree with this. 400hp is extremely, extremely, extremely optimistic. I wouldn't believe those numbers at all until I saw it on a dyno (and even then, you have to know that most dynos over-report). I would believe maybe something like 320hp at the wheels on high octane gas, forged internals, big valves, hot cams, etc., etc.. But at that point, I would worry about a short engine lifespan.

Custom ground crank over ported intake and exhaust valves bronze valve guides roller rockers in telling you it's not too far off and the other 4.9 was around 300 hp never had it on a dyno but I have a pretty good feel for it

Again, not be a downer, but you're talking vague figures at best. Roller rockers are good as are bronze valve guides are great for durability, but Stage 3 cam means nothing in itself. What induction is planned for this motor? I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but keep in mind , you're trying to make race horse out of a plow horse. A 5 liter v8 making 400 hp would be pretty rumpity rump camshaft wise, and that is with cross flowing cylinder heads. I'm not saying what you're doing won't work, I hope it does, but I believe your chances of installing this motor, and driving off into the sunset the way a stock motor would run is slim. Keep us posted.
