What did you do to your TJ today?

Today and tomorrow....changing the spark plugs, new motor oil, changed the auto trans filter and fluid and changing the transfer case ATF. Thinking about flushing the cooling system too, I'm not sure yet.
I'm trying to get everything ready for a pretty brutal road to a lake we're going to in a few weeks for a few days of camping. It's one of the most difficult roads in our area.

Drove it.

I wanted to go hit a local "bunny trail" I found a few weeks back, but when I got there, someone had parked a ginormous wheel loader at the entrance! I guess the park management doesn't want anybody on the trail right now, but you'd think they would have simply closed the gate!

So instead, I drove around a bit on a nearby dirt road so I could get a better feel for how she drives in low range and practice shifting the xfer case into 4-low.

Midway through TeraFlex long arm install, also building up the front axel. It got it’s truss today. Should be done tomorrow, 35’s get put on Thursday.

Now nobody will ever ask you what brand bumper you have. :) Mount an LED light strip behind it so the RC name will light up with your headlights at night.

I finally got around to trying to finish rebuilding my rear drive shaft. U joint even though I got it in straight would still click as I rotated it through its range of motion. I removed it and verified the needle bearings where they were supposed to be. I called Tom Woods to discuss. After talking about it and troubleshooting over the phone I discovered the drive shaft had a slight bend in it that made the u-joints not want to line up smoothly which was causing the clicking which would have been heavy vibrations on the road. When you look at the where on the previous pictures that confirmed that the drive shaft was out of whack.

I bit the bullet and bought a new rear drive shaft but I got extra clearancing this time since my pinion angle is so steep with the 241 transfer case. I'm just glad I got it in before the 4th of July weekend carnage orders that show up on Monday at their shop lol.

I want to give a special thanks to them for taking the time out to help me figure out if I could just repair this drive shaft instead of having to buy a new one.

Last week I replaced the oil pump in my 4.0. Went from around 10 PSI at idle with the oil hot to a hair over 20.

Two days ago, new cap/rotor/plugs/wires. The old plugs were probably the most worn I've seen on any engine. Guessing they had never been changed by the previous owner.

Today I drilled drain holes in the frame and washed it out. Got a ton of dirt, rust and gravel out of it. I couldn't get it all out, so I'm thinking maybe I'll try to tape over the holes and suck the rest out with a shop vac.

Which pump did you go with?

Today I did the last thing I thought I'd ever do, put on Rancho adjustable front lower control arms. Got a good deal, about half price shipped for the pair. I wanted to see if they'd clear my tires and they do, no more rub at lock. I was going to just put them stock length but measured my pinion angle and found it was over a degree high so I pushed it down a bit and got a bit more caster out of it too. Drives great for now, better return to center not that it was ever poor. I guess it's a good addition to every other cobbled together thing on my Jeep.

New radio. Nothing crazy but allows for Bluetooth / aux hookup, which the radio installed by the PO didn't have. New speakers eventually but what's in there right now isn't terrible so I'll keep it for a bit !

Took advantage of the dash being apart to clean up the ridiculous amounts of dust as well, so hopefully it'll feel / smell a lot cleaner.

  • Set of wire brushes for my drill came in. Going to use them to clean the rusty non-matching steel spare before I paint it.

  • Put tail lights, signals and license plate and mount back on — just enough to make it street legal so I could drive it around to charge the battery.

  • Realized that even though I meticulously bagged and tagged my hardware, I can't find the screw that goes in the double cup holder.

  • Check Engine light came on when I started it up for my drive. 9/10 times it's my gas cap, but it wasn't this time. Borrowed the OBD-II reader my family passes around when someone needs it from my dad so I can pull the codes later.

  • Got home and decided to finally wash the Jeep. Got all my supplies out, hooked up the hose to the spigot...and no water noise, no water. WTF. All signs point to be being something to do with the faucet. I'm not much on plumbing, so my father is going to help this weekend — say a prayer for my beautiful Azalea bushes in front of the spigot that the previous owners took meticulous care of. 🤣 Hauled all the car wash stuff back in the garage. A group of college-age kids started cutting across my lawn during all of this and I REALLY wished the water hose was working! 😄

  • Pulled the Jeep in and removed the passenger seat to start cleaning the vinyl floor. I have a set of Drill brushes coming in on Monday, but I'm hitting them with a nylon brush by hand right now. The seat fabric is very clean, but I'm going to use my water extractor on it because I know after 19 years some dirt is bound to come out of it.

Question on the seat: I slid the seat all the way forward so that I could get the rear bolts first. Then I slid it back like how it would be if someone was sitting in it to get the front bolts out and removed it in that position. Now I want to clean the mount/tracks, but the seat mount is very "stacked" on its self and hard to get into for cleaning. What the best way slide the seat forward to clean the mount now that it doesn't have the bolts to pull against for sliding?

(BTW, the clear bushings on the seats all cracked and broke off within days of each other last week, does having them gone make much difference?)
