Best muffler for a quiet rumble

My TJ is my 4th 4.0L Jeep, and ironically has completely factory original exhaust on it. I had several exhaust systems on the other jeeps I owned. The Jeeps with the Cali emissions and 3 cat converters were noticeably quieter with an aftermarket exhaust than my 1990 XJ was with the same setup.

I have a Banks Monster and I really like the sound.

I have one and like it very much as well. Not loud when driving at all. But nice burble at idle.

Good to know. I'm not much on exhaust sounds either - but I *do* like hearing the engine itself.

same with me @Zorba i want to hear whats going on with the vehicle not loud rumbling. If i want that ill ride the atv..

I would say I do too. But every time my stereo has gone out I thought more things were broken.

I have a Thrush Welded with the 3rd cat also. I am on the fence about it. It has a deeper tone but is a little buzzy for my tastes. I would prefer something a little throatier. I'm looking into the Banks Monster.
Maybe my expectations are to high though. I have 3 other vehicles, all with V8's and aftermarket exhaust.
I know a 4.0 will never truly sound like a V8, but I would like a little more of deep rumble if that's possible.

My Jeep came with a Banks, unsure of the model, and it’s way too loud in my opinion. Obnoxious in a parking garage for a Jeep.

My buddy has an MBRP on his and it sounds awesome. A little throaty with some burble but not loud at all.

I went into the exhaust shop and asked for the quietest muffler that would fit. They gave me a dynomax and I am super happy with it. Much quieter than my flowmaster 40 still gets a nice tone when you to romp on it. Never a problem hearing the lady at Starbucks drive thru

Asking that question is like asking "what are the best riding shocks on and off road"? Everyone has a different opinion. There's no right or wrong answer. Only you can decide.

I had a Thrush welded on my old Jeep. It got pretty loud over time. I replaced it with a Flowmaster Delta 40. Nice deep rumble, but not as "buzzy" as the Thrush. Slightly more quiet than a Banks monster that I also had.

Thats how PO of mine ripped the d 35 apart loud radio and cherry bomb muffler with no tailpipe they could not hear the pinion bearing grinding apart until way to late the carnage was terrible in that diff

You can't go wrong with the super turbo. I had two of their cat-backs on my XJs, put one on a friend's XJ, and another one on a friend's WJ. They held up well for the price and had a nice tone with stock volume. The only thing I wish was different is that they were stainless steel instead of aluminized steel being in the NorthEast, but spraying it with high heat paint seemed to help it last longer against the salt.

The best place is somewhere in the down pipe between the manifold and the cat converter. I have a new manifold and flex coupler waiting to go on mine, and I'll put it right in front on the piece that snakes around the oil pan.

My current exhaust manifold has the flex bellows welded into it. Do I still need this flex coupler in the exhaust pipe?

I have the Thrush Welded with the third cat removed on a 2005 4.0. I really like it and gives a nice gurgle with the odd pop. On a previous tj 98 4.0 I had the flowmaster 40 which also was very nice but x4 the price here in Canada and I think I prefer the trush. I was a little tempted to try the flowmaster 50 which I have on my wk 5.7 as I’m getting older I enjoy a little quite on the trail.

Last weekend I came down on the exhaust and kinked it and had to cut right at the down pipes. Damn it’s loud and can’t wait to fix it.

Yup! But it's nice to hear what people say. Then to youtube for examples of the sound. I specifically just didn't want one that's loud.
Anything is better than the swiss cheese I already have.

Youtube is very difficult for sound on mufflers unless the recorder really knows their equipment since most smartphones and even DSLRs are going to cut out a lot of the frequency. I was going to do a review on my muffler but didn't post it since I couldn't get a true to real sound without really modifying the audio. My exhaust sounded really high pitch and all the low end grumble was cut out.

I note this because I've seen a lot of comments on exhaust videos that people were upset with their purchases.

Sound is VERY hard to get accurate - we have the same problems with finger cymbals in dance videos. You either can't hear them, or they dominate the soundtrack. It takes pro level gear, and a damn smartphone ain't it.

Magnaflow from PO. I like the sound. I think I hear the intake (cowl) more than the exhaust, but it has a decent rumble to it, and not obnoxious.
