Insurance Question to the Community

How did you get Hagerty to insure you? I was trying to get a quote and they said I don't qualify for my Jeep... and I found this note:

Vehicles that may not qualify

Because we provide low-cost, Guaranteed Value® coverage, we are not able to provide coverage for certain vehicles due to how they are used and the increased risk associated.

  • Off-road or recreational vehicles
I used them for a Trans Am, but I just ran a quote for my TJ, and did not get that...

Hagerty will give you your agreed value. I just ran my '05 TJ, and they will insure for $15k. Never asked mileage...

I'd just end up keeping my Jeep anyways, even if it was smashed to pieces. I only really care about the fact that I'm legal and not held responsible for damage or medical bills, which is what liability gives me.

I was thinking about how you insure vehicles in the US, specifically modified ones when you have no "safety checks"

Say for example, you weld on new control arm brackets, but actually don't know what you're doing, and said control arm bracket fails and you lose control and damage another vehicle, will your liability insurance pay out?

That mighgt not be the best example, I could do the same here, but we do have regular safety checks where the inspector would/should pick something like that up. If you don't have a current "Warrant of Fitness" your insurance may very well be null and void.

did you check the box for off-road use? If not, and based on what they said about off-road vehicles... I wonder if they would pay out if you rolled it on a trail. Many insurance companies won't from what I hear.

I did not see such a box. I am not too concerned with rolling the TJ offroad in S. FL, but would be more concerned with the ~5 times a month I drive it to work With the idiots down here.

My insurance salesman told me to keep all the recipts for my mods and the added value will be included if I have a total loss.
That could be very good information. You learn by examples only. You think you know all about insurance because you shopped all around and found the cheapest. You don't anything until you have a claim.

In the US, it's state-by-state whether you have a safety inspection. Here in VA for example, we have a state safety inspection every 12 months. The inspector may or may not pick up on anything other than the checklist, and sometimes it seems arbitrary. Regardless of the safety inspection, the insurance company can always perform a full accident investigation and this may expose any poorly done or unsafe mods.

And can even vary within states, too. Northern VA also requires an emissions test every year, if I'm not mistaken. Most other parts of Virginia do not require this test and only mandate the vehicle inspection.

Exactly-only 4 counties require emissions: Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and the one with Richmond-not sure of the county name.
