Looking for a recommendation for a molle panel for the inside of the tailgate. Rigid is preferred, but all of them are grossly overpriced that I've been able to find...

Why not get a cloth piece that is wide & tall enough for what you want. Sew it up with a pocket so you could slide some flat stock thru on all 4 sides and screw it into the door?
I may very well roll my own, but a very wise teacher told me years ago to "never make something you can buy". But over the years I've added "Unless the store boughten ones are highway robbery" - which many of the molle panels I've seen are.

It was how we had to make a lot of the panels we used in Iraq because no one was making them yet.

I try to avoid micro projects when I can, but maybe I need to start looking for some ODG canvas - might as well make it "tacticool" if I gotta make the thing!

Yep - that's one of the ones I've been looking at. $78 is a shit load of coin to pay for something like that though.

I totally agree. One thing I've noticed is anything heavy (tools) sags and limits my ability to close the tailgate, even after removing the slack in the webbing.

WOW I've never really looked at them to see how much they cost. That is CRAZY. I'd guess you could make it for 1/3rd that cost but I don't know what the material costs anymore.

Is there anyone that makes a metal plate one?

@jscherb might have some ideas.
Zorba said he preferred a rigid molle panel and the only rigid molle panel I've done for a TJ tailgate is the one in the video below that's part of a tailgate table system and it's not in production yet anyway.

I have done a high-end soft panel in canvas and leather for the JK and JL and they are in production but so far the company doesn't believe there's enough interest in a TJ version of it for them to produce one specifically for the TJ although they have sold some of the JK panels to TJ people who said they would work out mounting it on a TJ tailgate themselves... https://www.overland-outfitters.com/store/p8/Tailgate_Storage_System_JK/JKU_('07-'18).html#/. Based on Zorba's initial comments about price and the fact that a TJ-specific version isn't available I don't think he'll be interested in.

JCR makes one...but I'm guessing you've probably already seen it and consider it too expensive.

I don't think you're wrong.

I'd like something similar but if I cover my tailgate I don't know where I'll put my stickers. :ROFLMAO:

Whatever happened to the tailgate - removeable table?

The prototype for that one is sitting in my workshop. I haven't done anything with it since I did this video (which shows it on a JK tailgate but it also mounts on a TJ tailgate). I did a small Molle panel as part of that prototype, you can see me attaching it in place in the video; I also designed a full-size Molle panel that attaches to the same mounts but I haven't made a prototype of that yet. I probably won't do anything more with it unless someone wants to put it into production.

True, shipping is pricey. Here's place by me to check out. https://www.facebook.com/armynavystoreofficial/
Zorba, Here's my set-up. MOLLE loops on both sides.

Also, make sure to weave the molle bags properly... so many folks just send through a couple of the loops, and do not weave through the bag itself as well on each loop. (had to instruct many privates through sergeants, and LT's, on how to thread the molle system)
