Garmin 5" or Garmin 6"?

About to buy a new GPS and ditch the street directory book, looking at the Garmin drive but the 6 inch may be a bit too big on the TJ, Would the 5 inch be better for the small windshield? Bigger isnt always best sort of thang? my jeep trail Guide is just way too small to read in the centre and I want a sat nav on the drivers side.

Actually I am pretty impressed with the factory stereo in my 06 and am happy to keep it old school, once you start with a gps stereo then you want a reversing cam then park assist then lane departure warning then auto pedestrian/crash brake assist! so at this stage I just want a good sat nav. I dont want to buy a 6" if its going to block too much intersection/roundabout vision. so you think the 5 inch would suit the TJ better.

Have you tried using the Gaia app? Get any tablet or phone and it is (supposedly) one of, if not the best mapping systems out there.

This. I have a Garmin inReach and use Gaia and the Garmin app on my phone. A lot of the overland guys use a tablet.

I don't like blocking windshield either. Here is a pic of my 5 inch Garmin. I just upgraded from a 4.3 so it seems big to me but doesn't block anything. My phone holder is next to it.

And is just fine. It gripes me to no end that I feel compelled to put a screen of ANY type in my car, I sure as Hell don't want it in the middle of the dash - or some gargantuan tablet! This ain't a Tesla.

I have the 6" mounted to the windshield over the dash tray, it does block a bit of the view but I haven't had a problem with it yet
I was going to mount it up on the top windshield header but I hang my sunglasses on the footman loop up there

I would do this but I dont want to loose the Trail Guide breadbox dome fixed to the tray

I tapped mine into the cigarette lighter wires and ran the wires up behind the dash so when I turn off the key the GPS powers down

I use a Drive 65. Definitely not too big but the smaller one work just fine. One reason I like the larger screen is that as you approach highway exits the screen splits with a list of services. A few other notices chime in occasionally. The larger screen is easier to see at a quick glance. I do much prefer the glass touch screen over my older pressure sensitive Nuvi.

How did you route your wires.

I bought the unfortunately expensive Garmin hard wire harness from Amazon. I tapped into one of the 12v outlet wires behind the switch panel. One is always on, the other is on with ignition. I chose to use on with ignition so I never have to power up or down the Garmin. The wires run behind the dash to the A pillar trim then over to the center of the windshield. If your TJ is an older version (02 or older) I dont believe the trim is there and making a clean looking install will be more difficult.
