Hey everyone.

Would you convert your dana 35 into super 35 if you wanted to install a selectable locker (i.e. arb air locker) with 31" tires?

For the sake of the argument, let's say that I would not run in the future bigger than 31" tires. Is it necessary to install 30 spline axle shafts?

I would not lock any Dana 35 axle without first having installed a Super 35 kit.

Thanks!

I am planning to lock it, when I change my axle ratio to 4.56 or 4.88 (4-cylinder).
Would this require the locker, new gears, and the new 30 spline axle shafts. Correct? or do I need anything else?

While you gather the answers, keep in mind that idiot with 35 spline shafts on 30" tires will find a way to snap them too ...
Reality - no one knows jack shit, other than that 30 splines performed well in the rocks, locked on 35s"

The Super 35 kit from Revolution Gear sold by Ricky @Garza at www.4lowparts.com contains everything needed including your choice of locker types, with the exception of the gears. Ricky can advise you on what you'll need. With 31's and 5-speed with your 2.5L I'd go 4.56 but go with 4.88 if you think you'll eventually be getting to 33" tires.

Would this be a reliable choice? The thing is I don't live in the USA, and those axle shafts are the only choice I can find right now in my local market for 30 spline dana 35 axle shafts.

I ran my old 2.5 5 speed TJ on 31x12.50x15 Swampers for almost 10 years locked front & rear stock axles - lockright, not selectable

That link isn't showing a specific product, it's just showing the front page and a bunch of advertisements. The link looks good but you'll also need a 30 spline locker.

How long the factory carbon steel 27 spline shafts will last with a locker depends on if you're in terrain tough and uneven enough to put a big enough load on a single axle shaft. With one tire in the air and a locker that doubles the load seen by the axle shaft connected to the tire still on the ground.

The link doesn’t wprk for me, but the description looks correct
my bad sorry!

My bad! I posted a screenshot above!

Yep those will work fine but as above you'll also need a compatible 30 spline locker that will work inside a Dana 35. I would not recommend a lunchbox locker in the rear. But if cost makes a full case locker too expensive, make sure to choose the No-Slip locker made by Powertrac... IF they make a 30 spline version that will work in a Dana 35.

Thats perfect! I am leaning towards a selectable locker. either arb air locker or eaton e-locker.

No.
The standard 35 will hold up with 31's fine. Yes even with a locker.

You may or may not want to change the shafts when it's all disassembled for a locker job but it's not necessary.

That said if I were you..
as this will be disassembled anyways.... and the fact you've a 4 cylinder......
take the new axle money and buy 4.88 gears instead.

Disassembly/reassembly of the differential gears is needed for a "real" locker so why not up the gears to something more power friendly for the little 4 banger.

Thanks for the answer!

The plan is to change the gears for sure when the locker is installed. So there is no dilemma between gears vs axle shafts. I remember your suggestion for 4.88 gears, but I am going to think about it more seriously when the time comes.

I just wanted to know about the 30 spline axle shafts, so I can calculate how much money I need.

There's a distinct lack of experience showing above where wheeling with a Dana 35 is concerned. And I personally have rescued a guy with a busted Dana 35 locked with 31" tires.

Here are just two posts from others about a broken Dana 35 on 31" tires...

This one from the administrator of a different forum... https://www.wranglerforum.com/threads/locking-Dana 35-on-31s.219007/#post-3362002

And one more from https://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f12/breaking-dana-35-a-1138589/#post10586960

Those who claim it won't happen don't know WTF they're talking about.

Alloy USA doesn’t make them from the correct material. You want 1541H like the Revolution kit. Alloy USA makes them from 4140 chromoly which doesn’t stand up in the long run to the bearings riding on the shaft unless the heat treating is done just right.

pfff, thats bad! I am not sure if I will be able to find a different pair of axle shafts here. I will keep on searching!
