I have a 2000, 4.0 with 32RH auto transmission and 3.07 gears. I installed new wheels and 33" tires so I would like to re-gear to 4.10 gears.

Does anyone know of a shop that does quality gear work in Middle TN? I'm pretty much dead center between Nashville and Chattanooga so anyone in between would be fine if they do quality work for a fair price.

This is a quote I got from a shop in Greenbrier which is a one man operation and gears is mostly all he does.

"Your looking at $1700 plus tax if you want to keep the open carriers.

New install kits
New gears
Oil
Shop supplies
New carriers for open diff Front/Rear
Axle bearings
Labor

1 year warranty on parts and labor

I run Timken or Koyo kits, I prefer the timken but covid has the timken kits running low at the moment. That would be Revolution brand gears."

With tax would put the price at $1865.75. That just seemed a little steep to me but I haven't had gears installed in a car since about 2008 so I don't know.

I'd appreciate any recommendations for a quality mechanic who can do the job for a little cheaper.

Some Tennesseans should be along to point you in the right direction but that quote is high IMO (realizing that different locales have different economies). I'd keep looking for something closer to $1200 for a simple gear change.

Chattanooga you have, Hudlow axle and Tom's 4x4 Super store.

I have no clue as to what they charge, but you can look up your parts online, see how much parts are gonna cost then you will know if the guy in Greenbrier is in line on his labor or not.

If you can find a set of 4 cyl axles for sale they come with 4.10s in them. Find a cheap rust bucket and then you can get even more spare parts. Part it out yourself and you can even make the cost back.

I’m in the area. I went to True Blue Truck. Same number as essentially Offroad. Another shop with many positive reviews is music city 4x4. They run sales sometimes.

I went with true blue as it is closest to me. as far as pricing, i regeared to 4.56 with TruTrack in front and back for around $2K out the door. They also did some adjustments for things that were loose or bad. There a Facebook group called Jeeps and Wrenches that’s in the area that’s helpful as well.

The thing that added to cost sometimes is the bee carrier required at some ratios.

Thanks for the help guys.

Yeah somewhere around $1200 is what I was expecting.

I'll check out Hudlow axle, Tom's 4x4 Super store, True blue truck and Music city 4x4 and see what kind of quotes they'll give me.

Not really interested in finding a junker for the axles and having to part out the rest. Most of the used axles I've seen for sale looked like junk and I don't know enough about them to know if I'm getting someone else's problems or bent axles or whatever.

I'll just keep looking and see who I can find to upgrade mine.

Just got a quote from Music City 4x4 for $1,966.50. Basically 2 grande for a simple gear install. No lockers, no new axles, just gears.

I'm guessing that includes new carriers too? I don't think there are Dana 30 or Dana 35 thick-cut gears (I know for certain there are thick cuts for D44s). Gear swaps usually run $1200-1400 here in AZ; throw in 2 new carriers (~$200), and some tax and you're getting close to what you're seeing for quotes.

Well when I told them theirs was the highest quote I had gotten so far, they told me the reason was they use Yukon parts and their mechanics are really good.

I got a quote from True Blue Truck and it was $1370.00 out the door which is much more what I was expecting and their reviews say they do quality work so I'll be stopping by to talk with them.

Oddly enough, when someone says they "use Yukon", I'm no longer impressed. The last few Yukon sets (gears + install kit) I have installed had a poor finish, modest fit, and were remarkably low on shims. They had also sent me the wrong inner seals on a Dana 30 kit and completely wrong pinion-preload shims, and when I mentioned it to them, they asked "if I had a parts store nearby" to pick up the correct ones (luckily I had a spare set in my parts bin and plenty of shims from previous regears).

I stick to Revolution nowadays (or Spicers with USA Standard master-install kits where needed).

Tennessee is so hard to Judge distances but if your close to Knoxville, I have heard. Just Jeeps is good with them and Rock your 4x4 but may be to far for you. Also on the Knoxville Jeep Club on Facebook there is a guy in Crossville that does them on the side as well.

I'm about 2.5 hrs from Knoxville. I'm in Hillsboro so the areas I'm looking at finding someone to install the gears would be Manchester, Tullahoma, Winchester, Decherd, Shelbyville, McMinnville, Murfreesboro, Smyrna, with Nashville and Chattanooga being the furthest distances I'm really looking to drive to have the work done which is an hour in either direction of me.

If I didn’t know any better, I would have said these were all villages or shires in The Last Kingdom! 🤣

Wondering if you went ahead with TBT for a regear. I'm in the same boat looking for a shop in the area. I'm just down the road from you in Beechgrove.

I haven't done anything yet. Just had back surgery so I'm waiting to recoup before I can get out and get things taken care of on the jeep.
