We had a lot of late snow this year.
I didn't see whether you gave an exact timing for your trip, but if it's soon, things aren't looking good for the San Juans.

Oh Wow. We will be out there there in a few weeks. I was actually planning on taking the Million Dollar Highway (550) from Ouray down to Durango at some point. I'll be sure to pay close attention to the weather. Is that normal there for this time of year?
I can snow almost anytime at those elevations. It wont stick around for very long though.
Years ago, I got to work in a pretty thick August blizzard in central Colorado. It had been in the 90s a few hours earlier.
I’ll be around Ouray over Memorial Day weekend and check it out in person. This winter wasn’t as heavy-snow as 2019 when several of their popular passes were closed after July 4.
The fact that Cinnamon is already open and Ophir is open to the top on the Silverton side means the rest should open up throughout June.
I did the western section of Engineer Pass along Mineral Creek last fall. I wouldn’t recommend a Grand Cherokee on that part.
The later you go, the more open and less muddy it will be, but the crowds will thicken exponentially.

The moisture that just hit was not typical of mid Spring in recent years, for southwest CO at least. As Spring becomes Summer in June, shorter duration, mid afternoon showers pop up almost daily can come down as snow. Asothers point out it doesn't last.
That being said it was mostly rain on the passes south of Red, with a mix in Silverton and all rain in Durango. Just took the hardtop off too
I just got back from the San Juans; not too muddy and quite a bit open for this time of year. Wasn’t even crowded.

Very cool. Thanks for the info. If I was taking the big Jeep, I wouldn't think twice about hitting that. But in the Grand....
I’m pretty sure a Grand Cherokee could handle Ophir pass with ease. There were no real obstacles and only one fairly tight turn.

That section of Black Bear isn't open yet and I don't think I'm quite ready for the whole run yet anyway. However, the bottom half is open to two-way traffic from Telluride, so I went as high as was allowed.
It might be the most treacherous spot for a certain type of vehicle. Years ago I followed a stock XJ through that same spot and he did a huge rear wheel stand and needed to be pushed through. The rest was as easy as driving to church.good line!
All I can think with these cases is slow and steady. With the FJ the weight shift seemed to toss it over, which happened quickly.
