I don't pick for past winners. I feel they won, give other folks a chance to win...I look for something that stands out but the landscape isn't overexposed with entries every month.

I feel it. A good slr pic would be a winner. A real lens is obvious when put next to a phone pic. Even I have fallen prey to the “phone”.

I don't own a smartphone, but even I will admit that they *can* take good pictures. Not as versatile as an SLR, but still pretty darn good. The reason most SLR pictures are better than most phone pictures is a simple matter of training. An SLR owner will at least "try", you're lucky if a smartphone person will even turn the darn thing sideways!

My wife just bought a new, expensive SLR. I'll get her to take some pictures so I can finish in the bottom 5 again next month.

seriously, I get it. I pushed against it for years. Analog has been my game for years.

Outside of resolution, clarity and the ability to play with depth of field, I don't think the camera matters one bit. An SLR doesn't somehow make a lousy photographer a good one. The camera can't choose the composition.

It is very simple, if the month ends in R and the entrant has an R in his avatar i vote for him, unless it is an LJ...that applies only to odd months except on leap year. Other wise I divide the year model by the vowels in the avatar and see if it greater or lesser than the square root of their points....then I vote for the highest number if its an odd number.

Keep it simple.

That depends on what you want great photography to be. Some of my favorite pictures are ones I took on my old flip phones many years ago. Composition and imagery will always matter more than the equipment does.

Unfortunately its a smart phone and not a smart person.lol..
My daughter took mine this month with her digital SLR.( I don't know anymore than that about her camera..Canon I think )
