All newer homes are required to have hurricane shutters. Older homes specially from the 60's and 70's all have awning types of shutters. Basically it is critical to protect the windows from and flying objects. If a window breaks the wind and pressure difference would cause a blowout on the opposite side. There are also impact resistant windows that are pricey but available for whoever can afford them.
We have plenty of food plus two weeks worth of MREs and plenty of potable water. If water becomes a real issue, I also have filters and tablets so I can use the neighbor's pool or if it's incredibly bad, we have retention ponds all over.
I'm just getting caught up here and hope you all stay safe and make it through with as little damage as possible. Sounds like you are all prepared. With that being said, my sister just sent my 18 yr. old nephew to USF from Wisconsin a couple weeks ago. He is there with one buddy and is bravimg the storm in his fifth floor apartment. I'm a wreck and my sister is all cool about it and is saying he's fine! He's not in the evacuation area. I really don't think they have a clue of the potential this hurricane has.

I'm sure you're right. Those are probably the people stuck in the gridlocked highways trying to get out.
As long as they are NOT in an evacuation zone and windows are boarded up they will be ok. Now if they are in an evacuation zone they need to go to a shelter because storm surge is not going to be good.
The hurricane surge is expected to be as high as 15 feet in the West coast of Florida
He lives on east fletcher which from what I can find he is not in the evacuation zone. Thinking of you all!!

I keep hearing that a big tornado has touched down in south Florida and is camouflaged by heavy rains.....wow can't imagine.

Also, one potable water source people often forget is their hot water tank. If there is any question about your water source being compromised, turn off your house water valve until you know the source is good.
