Opinions on Aluminum Trail Doors

Dammit I'm gonna end up having to get back on FB.

I agree on Savvy. For trail-only or even daily use in the area that Savvy and Blaine exist in, they'd be the clear choice. They were my original first choice but I had a timeline and they were on backorder. But I have climate and geographical (and relationship lol) considerations that make uppers a requirement for me.

Keep an eye on FB and you'll find a set eventually. Usually if I see good deals, I post then in the "for sale finds" subforum here.

Whelp, for better or for worse, I got the GR half doors mocked up and ready for powder and the trail. So I'm pretty much dialed up for topless in time for the weather. The way things work around here, we'll get another winter blast, a couple more fake Springs, one more dose of cold and wet, and then it'll get downright HOT and I'll want the hardtop on so I can run AC.. jusayin'.

Haven't been topless since I rolled my CJ5 in '82. My kid was 2, she's now 41.. damn!
So, all that considered, I'll have a nice run down nostalgia way, rattles and all.

What I said. All day yesterday in the shop with overhead door open, 60* and this morning..

UCF website specifically says their brackets can be used to fit OEM soft uppers. I emailed them to ask if that wording was intentionally used to indicate incompatibility with hard uppers.

I got an answer...kindof. Sounds like they don't know, lol.

They mount the same way, but whether the top edge of the UCF door follows the top edge of the OEM door or the beginning of the chamfer/bevel, the uppers would either not sit down all the way or they would sit down and not seal. Pretty sure best case I would have to fabricate something to make them seal up, worst case they just wouldn't work for me at all.

You should sell those to whoever Chris sold his jeep to.
whoever bought it was probably closer when I was in socal. shipping would be ridiculous. I might consider trading for some black ones to match the jeep, but im pretty sure i wouldn't just sell them even for a profit.

I dont hate the khaki on black, I actually kindof like it. its not like their lime green on a red jeep or something. Ill have to pull it out tomorrow and clean it up real good.

You’re right it could be worse. Like bright yellow on tan 🤪

Here's how I roll..

Got my GenRight aluminum half doors all mocked up with OEM hinges and mirrors, the interior bags, figured out how to do the dome light (the way I like) and they're going in the queue for powder coating tomorrow.

Tonight a recently acquainted pal is over in my shop talking recovery 'training' and other club related stuff for our meeting tomorrow. He tells me he has 2 sets of OEM TJ half-doors! One in chili pepper red, one in green, both with complete grey interior panels. I haven't laid eyes on them yet but will check them out real soon. Not sure what he wants for them but I gave him 4 Bilstein 5100s off the LJ and he wants one set of my Dana 44 4.10 for his TJ rear that has 4.10 front, 3.73 rear, and I'd planned to give those away, all before the door conversation.
So.. guess I'll take a bath on the GR doors if I have to have the OEM..
Potential good news is I have a TJ buddy locally who's running POS tube doors that he hates. Maybe he'd like a smokin' deal on the GR. C'mon man..

Go ahead - ROFLMFAO.

You gonna paint them or run'em?

My LJ is also black. Looks like I have a choice of chili pepper red or green, don't know which green. I can see me doing some amateur painting. Hey, it's gloss black, what could possibly go wrong.. f'k!

for now im gonna run em. i considered trying to painting them myself, then if it looked like shit i could get the genright half door armor, powder coat it black, and slap it on there. the edges wouldn't show enough for anyone to notice my shitty paint job.

For now ill run em, seems like the black makes the khaki pop almost like a gold. I might get attached to them that way.

when i built this TJ i had the dark moss green doors from my previous TJ, didn't hate it but wanted to black it out so i sold em and got some black full doors. my old green tailgate is on this rig, but you can only tell looking at the very edge because of the savvy tailgate skin. same concept with the genright skins i guess

For a dead ass simple trail door, you can weld steel skins to the Bestop soft lowers. PSC sells them, or used too. I’ll check if they are still around.

It comes out really nice imo, and you get to retain the shitty Bestop latch. I’ll order some skins this month, find my Bestop lowers, and see if I can get them welded up.

Can you guys remind me which soft uppers fit OEM lower half doors please? Cruising the topics but not finding specifics.
Is it just OEM uppers or does Bestop have them?

Oops... just remembered Rubicon R&P won't work in standard non-Rubicon TJ Dana 44. Correct? Would using the OEM Rubicon axles make a difference?

The housing doesn't care. The carrier does. Rubicon r&p just thick cut to get past the carrier break.

Eewww...

Pretty rough with dings & dents. Interior panels would need refinish, interior door latch not working. Don't know if I want to spend the time to repair, paint, etc. when I can powder coat the GR and toss them on.

He also left the uppers but they need new skins. Are those available for the OEM? I know someone addressed that but wasn't in that mode at the time.
