Well I really hope this works and I got all my dimensions right!
Starting to brianstorm a spare tire mount to support a 40, so this is great and I am excited to see how it all comes out for you.Well I really hope this works and I got all my dimensions right!View attachment 321474
I'll post pics when i get it mounted up, got a few more changes to do and picking up machined bars tonight. Then I'll have to figure out the actual spare holding attachment, trying to think of some cool ways to do it fancy like.Starting to brianstorm a spare tire mount to support a 40, so this is great and I am excited to see how it all comes out for you.
The base of the spare tire mount will be mounted to the machined bars correct? Will it be bolted to the bar?I'll post pics when i get it mounted up, got a few more changes to do and picking up machined bars tonight. I was thinking of using a spare unit bearing, but would need to render it "fixed" when the spare is attached so the wheel wouldn't move around freely.
That would be hilarious to be behind on the trailI knew a lot of guys who carried a spare spindle assembly and hub on their spare carrier and some of them left the hub unlocked and just let the tire spin.

I have seen trailer spare mounts that include a spindle, it's not a terrible idea. The base of the spare tire mount will be mounted to the machined bars correct? Will it be bolted to the bar?

What cone and t bar did you use? Trail gear?i had a jimmy rigged wheel spacer to fit the spare onto, but it was a PITA so i rigged up a cone and T bar and like it much better. on the gate it will be holding weight while pulling horizontally your center has to be strong or maybe a small drop stoop to aid carrying the full weight on a horizontal pin.
i'm 45* in the bed so it's not as drastic and it'll be strapped also.
drop stoop might not be bad idea instead of holding that monster and fumblin with a pin.
homemade, i might have an extra steel cone, if you need 1.What cone and t bar did you use?
a small shelf to put that big ass wheel onto so your not trying to hold it while fastening. the top of the receiver might work, didn't notice it yesterday. What's a drop stoop?
Ahh I see. I haven't decided if I want to do a bolt pattern or center screw. Do you have a link to your post that shows how you did it? I think the bumper is an ok intermediate step, I'm planning on keeping the mount simple, pulling the tire tight to the crossbars. I definitely prefer a 2 person lift but I was able to man handle it solo on the exogate.homemade, i might have an extra steel cone, if you need 1.

and you have the program info? those are pretty cool.
i didn't take pics or post much about it, i just switched it the other day.Ahh I see. I haven't decided if I want to do a bolt pattern or center screw. I do have the .stp file for a bar I could email. They're slightly different top to bottom and specific to my install.
I’m guessing this way of mounting spreads the load across the rear and thus elminates tailgate sag?Got the bars on tonight. Turned out pretty nice, it carried my weight well can't quite tell if it will sag under spare bouncing or not.
I don't love the license plate mount, need to figure that out after I do the spare mount.

What do you need math for?I’m guessing this way of mounting spreads the load across the rear and thus elminates tailgate sag?
Just trying to follow along. This is a great looking project.
What math goes into figuring this all out and how much weight it can hold adequately?

Ya, as Blaine mentioned zero math. The only bit that isnt way stronger than exogate is the wall at the backside of the hinge bushing. Exo doesn't use a sleeve in bushing fit like Blaine used so it's a 3/4" hole instead of .375" but also doesn't clamp up on the rotating piece like the exogate does. I ended up with .250-.375 there.I’m guessing this way of mounting spreads the load across the rear and thus elminates tailgate sag?

Doesn't matter now. The tailgate is just a moving panel that stops stuff from falling out the back and gives a few fasteners a place to get the skin to act as a shear panel.can you force it back together with some clamps and a hammer, then put some weld to it?
