Just bought the Radioddity radio that Bob recommended and got a GMRS call sign. I have no idea what I'm doing but I'm ready for whatever I guess.

So far, the only commitments I see for this run are,

Everyone else is tentative, including myself. For me to do this run, I need to board my dog for 3 days as he doesn't travel. It's a 4 hour drive to the trailhead, so I'd want to go up Friday night and find lodging to reduce the drive Saturday, then find lodging in La Porte Saturday night to break up the drive home. I would need to do this to make the trip more comfortable for myself and my wife. My other option is to go solo and make it a bonsai run for myself. I ain't as young as a once was, lol!
I'm not complaining, ok maybe a little, but if you 3 are still committed, and anyone else that wants to chime in, I'll make a decision tomorrow if If I'll join in. It's 111* at my house right now, and I don't expect next weekend to be much cooler, so I may consider heading west. Just don't want the run to end up like this,

Will do. You are right the FCC site is a disaster. My dad is a lifelong ham advanced guy (WB6FEL) so I grew up around it. I was studying for a technician license a while back but never finished.

Don't give up. Took me a couple months of studying and memorizing to get it, and I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Jim, I'm in the same boat. A day drive is too far for me. I like the hotel idea. Have you found anything yet? Although I'm still iffy on the weather.
I did the trail yesterday with another Jeep. If you are going to do a day trip, prepare for a very long day! It took us about 6 hours to do this trail. You can do this in about 4 hours if you do not stop for 28 miles .. lol. We had kids with us so stopped like 4-5 times.
Trail is not difficult at all. I didn't disconnect my sway bar and had no problem. But do disconnect it and air down tires for a much smoother ride. Stock JLU Rubicon did it without airing down but disconnected sway bar. This was his first off road trail as well. He needed help only at 1 spot on wet rocks going uphill.
Majority of the trail is a simple dusty dirt trail. About a mile of small rocks. There is a downed tree on the trail but has a bypass. Nice views and some good camping spots. Best camping spot is next to the creek crossing. Weather was much better on the trail than off. Make sure to stop at Saddleback Mountain Lookout.

One thing I forgot to mention, there are a lot of turnouts on this trail. Best is to use offline GPS app on your phone. In case you need it, I have attached the gpx file here.

There is an Inn in La Porte along with cabin rentals. No clue if there is any availability for just one night. Nice views @Indy. You should have just changed the date and we would have went.
