Arizona Rock Crawler

The big test will be if the sidewalls hold to AZ

MT released the Baja Boss X/S in Jan of this year. The X/S is supposed to have added sidewall strength among other improvements while still maintaining the M/T tread pattern. I have been running them for a couple of months and so far I am very happy with them!

As far as balancing them, it did take a bit of weight but, I am running Coyote internal bead locks so I don't know if the internal bead lock is the culprit. I will say I put 160 miles of pavement driving on them yesterday without any problems.

Hadn't heard of those.

15" wheels can also create interference with the TR flip if the BS isn't less than 4". I'm looking forward to getting a BBK because it's quite evident with the auto that I need one, and being able to get the 16/15" will be nice.

Wel dang. I haven’t heard of those before and seem harder to find than the typical Baja boss but they are out there… probably would have given those a try…

MT Baja Boss XS...

"...four-ply sidewall construction for increased puncture resistance. The sidewall construction comprises two radial plies sandwiched between two heavy-duty bias plies. The Baja Boss XS features a functional asymmetric pattern, extreme Sidebiters, and a silica-reinforced compound for off-road traction."

Interesting so they are half radial and half bias ply…

I looked at those. They are quite expensive. I felt like I was in Trep territory.

About $85 more per tire than the ones I got. A lot of guys like the trep bias ply tires out here purely for the sidewall strength. I don’t think bias ply’s balance as well as radials

Until you start having issues, it's not an issue. At least you can likely swap them in as needed, if needed since they look the same.

Check the markings near the bead of the tire. If its the X/S it will say it there.

What rims did you go with?
Well, since you asked I’ll take you down the rabbit hole lol.

I’ve been going back and forth for a while now on wheels. First I knew I needed beadlocks. Non negotiable at this point.

The hub kit makes things tough as you know since it adds 7/8” width on either side and I don’t want a shit scrub radius. I want to aim for about 4” net backspace with that. That essentially ruled out 15” wheels altogether right there since they all come in around 3.5-3.75” backspace. Plus the difficulty in fitting weights and plus the fact that 15” wheels are getting phased out. So I decided 17” wheels for sure.

I debated between traditional beadlocks and doing some internal coyotes. I couldn’t really find any traditional wheels I liked to pair with the coyotes with tolerable backspacing. They all have fake beadlocks nowadays. I really like the JK wheels Josh did. They looks sweet but my Jeep looks like such a trail rig at this point, I just didn’t really want the look of stock wheels on it to be honest. So I decided aesthetically I would like a traditional beadlock wheel. Plus beadlock wheels have more variety in backspacing.

I also picked traditional beadlocks for the mounting and install. It seems like a pick your poison type deal here and I decided I would rather deal with mounting traditional beadlocks than doing the coyotes and having to mount tires myself without a tire machine.

I’ve been looking for a while and found a couple I liked with tolerable backspacing. I really liked Battle Born Wheels but they were more expensive and 9” wide and I’d rather do 8.5” wide. I liked dirty life wheels but they were also 9”. Raceline Monsters look good and have tolerable backspacing. Trail ready wheels were seeming like an optimal choice because I could pick any backspace I want but damn they were expensive.

I’m going back and forth between all these options and I remember that 5 years ago I coached a good pole vaulter who’s family owns allied wheels who owns Raceline. I shot the dad a message and he said he would hook me up big time. That made the decision easy. The wheels haven’t gotten here yet but we ordered some raceline monsters in 17”X8.5” in 4.75” backspacing. That puts me at a net 3.875” of backspacing which is close enough to 4” for me. Plus my current 5” BS wheels are rubbing my anti rock and shocks about as hard as I’m comfortable with, so a smidge more room will be welcome.

Sweet wheels, but damn, what a story!

FWIW, I have the MT Baja boss AT on my truck and I like them well enough that I’ve been looking at getting a set for the jeep. I think you’ll like em.

Gotcha, I think good choice for off the shelf wheels esp if you got a discount.

BTW, I asked because I know that rabbit hole well (or I should say bear cave, after seeing @jjvw's wheel above). I went pretty crazy trying to find a good wheel with the right specs and hence the overseas option I chose.

I like my bearlocks quite a lot!
