Should I buy this Ford 8.8 axle?

Wow.

Think about it fool. A larger center section hanging down 1/4 quarter of an inch lower. It’s larger in regards to the housing! But it only hangs down a quarter of the inch lower.

Perfect example.
Pro rock 60–more GROUND CLEARANCE than a 44.

The pro rock 60 has more hanging below the axle centerline compared to a 44. The 60 is a “pig” compared to a 44, yet has more ground clearance. Makes sense in my head.

Tolerable?
Bro your making a big deal about 1/4 of an inch?

“Back up mrbalin, your about to scratch your diff!!!! Go around that rock that’s a quarter of an inch to tall”
I made it this far, do I really have to back up?

Sounds like you got it.

That’s what I’m talking about!

Would you have bought that axle if it had a quarter of an inch less ground clearance?

How thick is that diff skid?

I think it's safe to say that the reason it's a RJ60 is because he didn't want a regular 60 with less ground clearance.

At the end of the day, someone is going to have to make a compelling argument for where the 8.8 fits into the progression of increasingly larger TJ builds compared to other options. Housing clearance is only a single part of those considerations. What about the axle width?

Just stop. I just was arguing against the folks that blurt our random here say and scare folks away. Jjvw blurted the 44 has better ground clearance, and yes I agree but it’s a quarter of an inch difference. mrblain said it’s so much of a difference that he is shaving 8.8, yet is running at least a 1/8” if not a 1/4” diff skid. I don’t get it.

Axle width diff is 1.25” in most cases
Spacers are had around $75 shipped.

In fact my calculations have an 8.8 under my Jeep for under 1k

You are more than free to make a case for the 8.8. All you have done so far is agree that it is larger than other options. Keep going.

With a locker? Is this axle geared the same as the front?
No locker in price calculation.

Got to look into what locker is included with the tj 44 and what’s need to run the locker in the rubicon version if you want to compare 44 to 8.8. My uncle said he doesn’t know of an 8.8 that has a air rocker

Bro it depends on what you get everything for? Cost and price you pay is a HUGE variable.

Let's try going about this another way.

If the 44 and the 8.8 are the same exact out the door cost, what are the pros and cons of each, and which is overall best suited for the TJ?
