04’ JMT’s Twin Teenagers Build

Day 7:

We have a lot to do. Well, they do. I made them research cleaning the engine, and they followed to a T the instructions from another forum post. People are so neglectful of these TJ’s. It turned out nicer than mine. 🤣

After:

Wow I think I need to go read that same post ...

We noticed the HVAC blower didn’t work on the first two settings. They bought a blower resistor and they learned what a PITA it is to work in small spaces. The relief is, it works now! Another plus is they have working AC. I can’t say that for my rig 😬

Usually our drives are short, and I had not noticed the rig not getting up to operating temp. I should have, mine is very quick, less than a mile. There’s was about 165* while flying down the highway for miles. This can affect engine wear and gas mileage, since it changes the gas/air mixture for combustion. We ordered a Stant 195* Thermostat and a new Fel-Pro gasket that should be here next week! The idiots who manufactured these lower temp thermostats. 😬🙄

Build still on standby as we wait for my shocks. We just need to clean up their frame surface rust and a few more maintenance items. I’m almost done with the Rubi (hoping today), so I can move that project off my plate and focus on their rig. My wife loves their Auto transmission. TJ’s are so nimble. Easy to dart around town. Way easier than my wife’s bus (Yukon SLT).

Seemed lots easier doing those contortions when I was south of 50 years old!

Day IDK: One week left in their school year. So proud of both of them. They are about to have some free time. Today was a short school day, so I urged them into the garage to fix 4 frame nutserts: 1 light duty and 3 heavy duty. @mrblaine was great enough to send them a whole box 📦 of goodies including more than enough metric nutserts. Handing over the angle grinder and drill wasn’t too hard, but the angle grinder does cause pause. They did well. The new nutsert tool (left) is simple and effective. The wizard supplied some great coconut 🥥 lip balm to get me through. The girls loved the Hello Kitty stickers. We’re almost ready to start building this rig!

DAY IDK +1: Woke up with plans to put the skid back on. Boy comes to me and says, "This would be a good time to do change the Transmission fluid." I'm so glad he said that (that was my plan). We already had a new Dorman pan with drain plug, so we just drilled the stock pan. I"m going to tap it and add a plug for someone else or as backup if they somehow careen this one. Lubelocker gasket, transmission filter, and Mopar ATF+4 was all ready to go, so they went to work with my assistance. When they were about to put the new filter in, I got interrupted by my daughter who decided to ride her hoverboard through a puddle of water 5" deep. "Won't work dadd!" Ya think. So I'm taking that apart and blowing out all the water off the circuitry. Meanwhile, the boys finish up. They drivec the Jeep out, put Mom's car back, all done, feeling good. I walk over to the box that had the Transmission filter in it and there's a little O-Ring in there. "Boys, what's this? You always go through the box contents and figure out what everything is before installing." They have this devastated look on their face, after which one of them starts quickly justifying why it may not be necessary. 🤣 I told them," YOu research it and see, I'm not doing that, I didn't make this mistake." 5 minutes later, "Yes, we have to install it or the fluid won't go through the filter." Good, they learned something.

10 minutes later they're still in the garage. I walk out and snap a pic of them. 🤣 One of them looks at me and says, "Dad, I remember working on your Jeep many times and we'd say, "Alright, we're almost done, let's get this done, and we'd get it all doen and then something would be not done, so we'd take it apart and do it again. When you have a Jeep, you're not done, you're never done, you think you're done, but the Jeep is never done, if you drive it off a cliff, you're done, but the Jeep's not done, you'll never finish a Jeep!" - 15 year old Joshua.

One of them went out and just started working on it himself, so I went out and helped him remove the tranny skid, drain the pan, remove the filter, put the O-Ring on, reversed everything and filled it up with ATF+4. Fluid level looks good. It was encouraging that he took the initiative!

Smart kid, he must get it from his mom.... :D But they are learning and that is the most important part.

Shit I know I ain't NEVER right and I don't have a woman around to tell me that.

Looking forward to seeing how you setup the compressor. As I told you I know it ain't new but it works and does put out a decent amount of CFM. I know I don't have to tell you but I'd for sure do some type of rubber mount for it.

I'm taking it (and the boys) to Ace Hardware next week to run through the rubber feet and see what we can come up with! 😊 Thank you! One of them was looking in the engine bay today and asking me, "Is this where we're going to put it?"

At some point I'm going to seriously enjoy being able to meet the twins and hit some trails with all of you. You're doing a great job raising and teaching all the kids the things they'll need in the future.

Come to think of it, I’ve got a sheet of 1/4” rubber that they used to make a gasket for the hardtop hinges. I bet we could cut and fit that to fit under the compressor on the extra battery tray and bolt it down. 👍🏼

Great idea. Are you going to do any plumbing of lines for a air chuck or just something straight off the compressor?

Back to work. They’re done with school. They sanded down the surface rust on the frame, washed, degreased, primed with self-etching primer. Wait a few days for the semi-flat black enamel to arrive, then scuff a bit, paint, and start the build! Check the pic of one boy admiring his work! 😀
