2.5 versus 2.4

I've driven both extensively also. The 2.5 has a little more low end, but the 2.4 kills it on the top end. The 2.4 is made to rev to 7k, but it's limited to 6k in the Jeep. The 2.4 is also much lighter aluminum block with aluminum heads, the 2.5 is all iron. I picked up 11hp after uncorking the exhaust and intake on my 2.4 giving it 121hp at the wheels at 4950. Still not enough power to turn 31s on the highway comfortably even with 4.10s and a six speed, but it has enough gears to go through pretty much anything offroad if your not afraid of the rev limiter. I'd really be interested to see what a set of different cams and a tune would do for it.
I talked to a guy that lives in AZ back in 2006 when I still had my 2.4 and he scavenged a turbo setup out of a PT Cruiser and grabbed up an exhaust manifold for it. He said he was kicking out somewhere around 250 hp

Really? I have no experience with anything other than the 2.5, and that was in a Cherokee XJ.

So I guess your experience is the opposite of the others above. I wonder if it has anything to do with the Compass potentially being geared differently, weight, etc.

The compass weight is almost identical and she has the 5spd manual so it's kinda apples vs apples. It's probably fine for off road and local use as is the 2.5, which is why I have one. She just wants to pay it off and dump it at this point.

Chris. as you know I have the 2.5 in my Jeep but my wife has the 2.4 in her Compass and it's a dog. she would take my 2.5 any day. I have done extensive work on both engines and the 2.4 is a plastic fantastic POS.
The 2.4 in the Compass is a completely different engine than the 2.4 in the TJs. The Compass 2.4 is the known as the "World" or "Global" or "Multiair" engine. It's a completely different design made in a different factory by Global Engine Manufacturing. The TJ 2.4 is based on the old 2.2 Turbo Chyrysler/ Mitsubishi motor zero parts interchange.

There is a kid on YouTube I think his name is ZackFab that makes exhaust manifolds and piping for the TJ to bolt on the PT Cruiser/Neon turbo. I've seen SRT Neons make over 400hp on the dyno. I think the 250-300 range would be perfect for a 6 speed TJ. The other nice thing about the Chrysler 2.4 is it doesn't leak or overheat like the 4.0 the only negative is longevity with the aluminum block. I cant imagine a 300hp 2.4 is going to go much over 100k never mind the 300-400k you can see with a 4.0.

Didn't know that, but I never researched it, just assumed.

How was the Mitsubishi engine ?

The Mitsubishi motor was great, it made over 200hp with a turbo back in the 90s hung around until 2006 made 300hp in the SRT neon. It's a solid little motor that will live a long time in the 200-250hp range. Non interference belt driven cams, doesn't leak, overheat or pop head gaskets in the TJ. It's almost weird not having to watch the temperature wheeling, the oil stains in my driveway are actially drying up. I've owned Jeeps since the 80s so the stains are big. I'd love to slap a turbo on it and have a 6 speed mid engine Jeep, it would probably do wheelies. Plenty of room for activities under the hood. Look how small it is, you can see how far back behind the front axle it is. It does have a weird cam sensor that needs to gapped or it runs like dog crap. (No air filter comments I run a 4.0 box that's just on to give me room to do tune ups and motor work .)

Hi,

I drive a 2004 SE with the 2.4 and my air filter housing is breaking. I've searched in vain for a new housing and haven't had any luck. I noticed in this thread that you mentioned you're using a 4.0 air filter housing on your 2.4. Would you be willing to share a little more info on how to go about configuring that setup? The 4.0 air filter housing is definitely more available.

Thank you
