2005 4.0 wont start

if the ASD is working the PCM is is working properly, at least during startup.

The ASD is an area of future research for me... but that "at least during startup" comment had me thinking. Do we know if the ASD is remaining on, or is it clicking back off after 3 seconds? (although I thought that delay was actually 1.8 seconds?)

And when you triple checked TDC, are you sure you were on a compression stroke? You could be 180* out of phase. Although typically that will result in a flipping sweet backfire. I think I would go back to step 0 on setting the distributor shaft (or whatever it's called when you don't have a distributor), which I'm sure is precisely documented somewhere but is basically this:

  1. remove the dizzy
  2. push a pin or nail or something through the 2 small alignment holes (as described a few posts ago) on the dizzy
  3. rotate engine to TCD on a compression stroke. Verify compression vs exhaust by sticking your finger in the #1 spark plug hole & feeling pressure.
  4. with a long screwdriver rotate the oil pump drive slot to the necessary orientation to let the dizzy shaft slide in
  5. drop the dizzy almost into place, the orientation is almost foolproof with the location of the hold down screw
  6. remove the pin from step #2, but don't let the gears rotate yet
  7. drop the dizzy in the rest of the way. Note that as the drive gear meshes with the cam gear the dizzy will rotate a little, this is expected
  8. Tighten the screw, install the sensor, plug it in etc

Thanks for the response the battery is 2 yrs old based on the sticker but im sure its been ran dead several times as i bought the jeep non running . It looks like stock ODPA based on the look compared to the rest of the engine. it had some aftermarket headlights in it i have since removed that's all i have found that wasn't oem. I will check wiring today real good but i have spark on the coil rail and compression i have fuel but will test the pressure today does not start with at all with starting fluid, i replaced the CPS with oem and no change also. I can pull the vin using my scanner off the obd2 port but not getting any errors at all. Do you think next best test is have you run a test on the PCM?

Have you tried bypassing the ignition switch? Sometime the (lovely) piece of plastic inside the ignition tumbler can stop a Wrangler from cranking. You can mail the PCM into us and I will test it for you.

Let me know if you would like to do that and I will create an order number for you so we can keep track of your pcm.

Have you removed the catalytic converters? Air has to get in but air also has to get out. If they’re super plugged they could cause a stall or no start.

Not saying it’s 100% your issue but it’s worth ruling out.

My poor wife has to hear all of my ideas and i was actually telling her this last night as someting need to check ... shes my key turner during all of this so its on the list also

You can either drop them down from the manifold and see if it will start, or just pull out the O2 sensors above the cats. I seriously doubt that is the issue as it didn't at least go bang on the starting fluid though. Both cats would have to be completely blocked.

Please send me an email to [email protected] and I will respond with an order number....We will get it in and test usually the same day it arrives.

He has spark and fuel so the ASD has to be on.

You said it yourself - *during startup*. What about after 5-6 seconds? I’m guessing that when he checked for spark it was during the initial window when the ASD turns on. If he kept cranking and checking for spark would it still pass that test?

Or the cat in the rear could be nuked, certainly an outlier though, but verifying the motor can breathe both in and out is necessary. No telling what has been ran through the system.

Either you have met the ASD “On” conditions or not. Besides effectively checking all of your spark in that amount of time would be difficult.

Narrator: Nobody recommended that.
Well a few people on this forum have:

Flagship One out of New York. There was a little bit of delay compared to what they said would be shipping time, but the quality of the product definitely made up for it.

This time, I bought a remanufactured pcm from Flagship 1 for around $500 and I never had any more issues and the CEL remained off. Well worth the money. I have since sold the Jeep but it had no issue at all

Guys and galls, I finally broke down and bought a new or should I say remanufactured PCM from Flagship one, and I couldn't be happier. it cost about 520 and some change, but it works like it should and my jeep is fun to drive again. And it only takes about 10 minutes to install.

I dont think anyone here has recommended them ! The ONLY one the knowledgeable users here use is MARK at WRANGLERFIX !!!! he has great knowledge and goes well out of his way to get you running and WILL NOT sell you a PCM unless you need it. his customer service is outstanding !!!!!!!!!!! CAD1 you must work for FLAGSHIP ONE ?
No I don’t. I had similar issues with my TJ and at that time I was reviewing different peoples post about potential ways to get fixed and I just remembered that flagship was mentioned a few times (go back and review some of the posts and you’ll see others have used and recommended flag ship) I don’t care who anyone uses that needs a PMC fixed. I’m sure wranglerfix is great and I would have mentioned them as well if I remembered their name. As you can see I’m relatively new to this forum so I don’t know who’s everyone’s favorite.

So much fun that you sold it, and then wrote a chronologically confusing shill post about it.

I did not sell my TJ. These were quotes from others that posted on this forum concerning flagship. Next time I will go slower for you to explain.

Finally got parts to test fuel pressure 44 key on 50-54?? was bouncing alot during cranking ... when cranking stopped leaked down to 44 ish going to send my PCM to wranglerfix to test

Pressure should be 58 +/- 2. What you have should be plenty to at least start it though.
