Hi I’m wondering if anyone on here could lead me in the right direction on what I will all need to swap my 42rle to an ax15 in my 2004 Jeep Wrangler I know I need the transmission and clutch pedal assembly and also an ecm frim the same of my Jeep and a new starter for a manual but not sure what else I will all need I read some forums I found but want to make sure I have everything

It has not but really want a manual but don’t want to buy a whole other Jeep
Ok, why do you believe you want a manual. Do you plan on running any type of technical trails ever with this Jeep?

You will need a trans mount and a trans mount bracket along with all the console requirements when the shifter is installed.

Flywheel too.

Once I lift it this summer I plan on doing a lot of different type of trails and always wanted a manual but when I bought the jeep I needed a vehicle at the time so I wasn’t being picky about the trans at the time

Got it. You will find alot of members here will tell you to leave it an Automatic due to the increased control in technical trails. I understand wanting a manual due to possible perceived reliability concerns of the Automatic. But, my opinion is a well maintained Auto will be your best bet for your rig. And you already have one installed.

If you are hell bent on swapping it out, I say do it. Otherwise I say the money spent swapping that 42RLE out could go along way towards other upgrades. Like a high end suspension and the proper gear ratio for the tire size you choose.

So keep the auto? As of what I know their isn’t anything wrong with it but I am also regearing it at the end of summer and it’ll probably drive better I’m already on 33s and highways speeds aren’t too good since I still of the stock 3.73 gears

I'm just one voice, but yes keep the auto. You will want 5.13 gears if not a Rubicon or 5.38 gears if a Rubicon. Put that money towards the gears. Just me though!

I was reading threads that 5.38s will be better because I’m going to 35s once I lift it and the guy in the threads said he wishes he could do more but he would have to get bigger axles for that night I read 5.13 are good for the 33s

5.13 for 33s and 5.38 for 35s. This of course applies to the 42RLE transmission.

Get in the habit of turning the OD off every time you start the vehicle, and you'll grow to really like the transmission.

Before you change your mind because the forums told you auto is better, you need to assess what you plan on using the jeep for. I loved wheeling my manual up until I started going to JV. If you are not wheeling very difficult trails, I would not get tripped up over auto vs manual. If you prefer driving manual go for it.

some other parts to consider:
-transmission spacer plate
-pilot bearing/adaptor
-starter
-floor plate/shift boot
-console shift boot/trim
-manual ecm

This is not inclusive just some stuff I could think of not mentioned.

Converting from the 42RLE to an AX-15 would be a major downgrade where offroading is concerned. You get 2-3X more low-end torque with an automatic, yes that is true, and you also get an infinitely low ratio 1st gear which is extremely helpful on very difficult trails. I converted from the AX-15 to an automatic for rock crawling and the benefits I gained were amazing.

Ditto, listen to Jerry's advise.

Technical rock crawlers like autos. It does give more control without having to slip a clutch. When most drag racers get serious, the go auto.

That being said, I will never buy an automatic vehicle when I have a choice. It's a matter of preference and don't let anybody change your mind for you unless you are after a specific "performance" result. To each his own. To the people that preach a manual is an automatic downgrade, whatever. I enjoy rowing my own gears. I'm also not a soccer mom, so that's another reason.

Love this post. I have previously posted about the same topic as I have had 42RLE reliability issues as well. I was met with mostly negative comments also. I've always preferred driving manual, and the offroad benefits don't matter as much to me. Just my two cents but there's more than one way to do things.
Cheers
