I am new here so this may have already been covered but im having a problem with my front end peg legging in 4WD. I have an 04 sport mostly stock setup and i bottomed out pretty hard in a deep rut and had to hammer it to get out. Since then ive noticed my passenger side front tire isnt spinning in 4WD. My research is leading me to the front diff but being a shade tree mechanic at best i dont want to start pulling things apart without a little direction. Thanks in advance and God bless

Welcome to WTF! How's your passenger-side axle shaft? Take a look at its u-joint and the "ears" on the short and long axle shafts that hold the u-joint. See any damage in that area?

This what mine looked like when one of my ears broke, see how yours look. Something like this is a little more likely than damage inside the axle housing.

No visible damage like that. I am in bad need of replacing my U joints, ball joints, and bushings but other than that and some neglected rust no visible damage. I guess i need to lift it off the tires and see if i can hear any popping or grinding

What is peg legging?

Does the front passenger wheel spin while in RWD and during normal driving?

By not spinning in 4WD, are you saying the wheel locks up and drags while the other 3 wheels drive normally?

Or did you break the front passenger axle shaft?

Sorry for the country boy lingo lol. It drives fine i 2WD but in 4WD only 3 wheels are pulling. Front right just sits on a slick surface while the other 3 spin

Got a locker in the front?

My money's on a snapped axle shaft.

Pull it apart and find out. Lots of upgrades out there...and stock ones are practically free.

Put it in 4x4, jack up only the pass front tire and see if you can spin it. It should have a little play but not spin freely or make any gritty or grinding noises.

For bonus points lift the other front tire too and see if it rotates in the opposite direction. Thats a good thing for a factory differential

Could it be that the OP has a lunch box locker and now there is something wrong with it. The OP seems fairly confident both front tires were pulling before.

But as others have stated please do some more troubleshooting. You may have to take the front diff off to verify if you have either open diffs or a locker.

Without lockers the tires on each axle are driven equally when the traction is equal underneath each tire when in 4x4. Open differentials split the power exactly 50-50 to each side.

That's not something you would be able to see until it loses traction, at which point it would stop being driven .
He said it wasn't spinning which would imply it didn't have traction.

As others have said, unless you have a Rubicon or aftermarket front diff, only one tire is supposed to spin. That's how an open differential works.

I know how it works... here's a copy of the article I wrote on the subject 20+ years ago https://wranglertjforum.com/threads/why-do-i-need-a-locker-i-thought-i-had-four-wheel-drive.38643/

He had the definition of torque changed to traction in Websters dictionary.

His publications are considered National Treasures.

His face is being studied to add to Mount Rushmore.

In high school, even his locker had lockers.

He has never filled up on chips.

His gear oil is used by priests to anoint the sick.

If he ever got stuck on a trail, the trail would apologize.

He is ....our man and ......the most interesting TJ owner in the world.

Not exactly. Without reading Jerry's article, I will assume that he pointed out that the open diff delivers exactly the same amount of torque to each side. The reason we get confused is torque is a function of resistance. If it takes 10 ft lbs of torque to spin the tire that has the least amount of traction or is mostly in the air, then the tire on the ground with the most amount of traction also gets exactly 10 ft lbs of torque.
