I'm currently working a military exercise over a few weeks, today I grabbed a young airmen & sat him in my truck to scribe paperwork for me since he wasn't doing much else. In every spreadsheet block that required a date I made him write "NEVER FORGET!!!!", and at one point I said "airman, where were you on 9/11?"
He said "I was two months old."
I told him I wish I hadn't asked because I all of a sudden feel like an old fuck.
As for me, I hadn't joined the service yet. I was fixing cars at a Toyota dealership in Fairfax, VA. I remember seeing all the firetrucks heading east to D.C. when the Pentagon got hit. We watched the second tower get hit in the customer lounge.
At about noon I realized I had a customer's truck still on the lift for minor service after several hours so I rushed into the lounge to apologize. I remember this dude just sitting there glued to the TV, he said something like "whatever man, it doesn't even matter right now."
I joined the USAF shortly thereafter.
