98 sport with hyper flash after LED tail light install

I didn’t have a 5 prong. I peeked under the steering wheel and saw that relay and assumed it was the flasher. Once I put the ep26 in the correct place all was good. What a dumb ass. But do you know what that relay is for? Because I obviously fucked it up and need to get a new one. I have a 3 speed auto and the relay is just above and to the driver side of the brake pedal
There's a bunch of real estate you can see peeking under the steering wheel. Where specifically are you talking about?

Oh okay, so it was the wrong location. I have no idea what that one relay is for. Did you break off the center pin of that first relay you removed? You can just buy another 5 pin if you need to and then plug it in. Not sure what it’s for so no clue if it’s important or not. Usually the 3 speed auto uses a relay for the lockup torque converter but I’m not sure where it’s installed in the TJ if the TJ uses one.

@mrblaine, any idea what a relay next to the brake pedal would be for on a 3 speed 98 TJ? 56006709?
I can double check since it has been awhile since I've been under the dash of an early one but I seem to recall that the flasher is on the firewall roughly straight forward of your right knee when you are sitting in the left driver's seat. Is that correct?

I believe that is correct, and Bones did end up finding the right location for the flasher so he’s good there.

Only issue now (and maybe not even an issue) is he’s concerned about the function of that relay he broke the center pin on, which installs above and to the left of the brake pedal. Can’t find anything malfunctioning from it so far, but wants to make sure it’s not important.

Looks like it might be for the cigar lighter relay. Test the outlet with and without the relay installed. If the outlet doesn’t work with the relay pulled, then reinstall it and see if it does. If it still doesn’t, then see if a new relay makes it work.

if the outlet still works with the relay pulled then it isn’t that.

Make sure you test with the key on. It is an ignition powered circuit.

The flasher relay is on the steering column right side. This one is a few inches from the top of the brake pedal to the drivers side

Where on the steering column did you find yours? I'm only aware of two places for the flasher in the TJ. One is on the firewall I described above and the other is part of the multi function switch inside the steering column clamshell trim.

If it is the cigar relay, then the center pin is unimportant. It is a 5 pin relay so that center pin is probably 87A, which definitely wouldn’t be needed in this application. So if it is for the cigar lighter, verify that the lighter doesn’t work with relay pulled, and works with it reinstalled.

ding, ding, ding. We have a winner. Just tested it and it is the lighter relay

You have to remove the shell and metal frame below the steering wheel and it is just on the right side of the steering column a few inches in. It Is held in with an 8mm screw

I believe that is the firewall location he’s talking about. This is from Stu Offroad’s write up for 97-00.

Sounds like you changed the right location’s relay. It’s usually up next to the steering column on the right side if I remember right.

I’m still curious about why you had a 5 prong previously, why it isn’t the right part number for the Jeeps with factory 5 prongs (2001-2006), and what the deal is with the missing center prong.
Something is off here.. .i asked the same thing....pre 01's had 4 prong relays
I’m well aware. But he was talking about load resistors. Up front for that mod you use inline resistors. Two very different items for different uses. And the mod is done to the 2-wire side marker to make it function like a 3 wire would. Ends up mimicking the front.

when you’re doing the 2 wire thing, the purpose of the resistor there is to dim the bulb for a running lamp mode. It has nothing to do with load and blinking. Hence why an inline resistor is used.
I'm well aware...i did a write up here about that very thing as i had to do that to mine

He had a 4 prong relay. The 5 prong relay he originally posted was not for the flasher, it was the cigar lighter relay. He eventually installed his flasher in the right spot and replaced his existing OE 4 prong with the EP26 4 prong. His lights are all good now.

As for the resistors we are saying the same thing. My comment "the flasher negates the need for resistors" was specifically referring to load resistors. No need for those with the flasher, as you know already. Of course the inline resistors are indeed necessary if wanting to change the stuff up front, but this post wasn't about that (it was about the tail lights he changed only) so I wasn't really going there.
