Alrighty, here we go folks.. 98 Wrangler 4.0 Automatic

Driving and noticed relatively sluggish power, barely creeping up to 40 mph and accelerating was pretty much non existent. Also was pulling hard right. RPMs were not real high or anything and finally was able to creep over 55mph and everything seemed normal again for rest of the 30 mile drive (pulling went away)... thought caliper or something might have snagged. But didn't want to chance it, so just made it home. Forgot, did notice a slight transmission fluid smell in cab and burning rubber smells (very slightly), but thought nothing of it because jeep was driving fine again. Jeep did feel like was running a little hot as well, temps were never an issue, just didnt feel right to me.

2 days later... drove to lowes (less than 5 miles away) and was going along nicely on hwy, then transmission slipped majorly as I was pulling up close to parking lot. It re engaged relatively quickly so I went and picked up what I needed and figured I mess with it when I got home. The 5 miles home was literally hell... transmission kept slipping completely out, would sometimes catch but not for more than a second or two. Here's the kicker though, if I stopped, put in park, and turned off the key, when I restarted the jeep i could engage the transmission (reverse or drive) for maybe 100 yards or so, then would slip again... had to do this all the way home. Like I said, hell. Got back, finally, transmission fluid smelled terrible. The stuff looked literally like motor oil was so black. Honestly, pretty good with mechanical issues, but this one throwing me for a loop.

Dropped plate, changed filter (rather heavy on the metal shavings), and flushed the old fluid out. Finally took her back out and although transmission did seem to run a bit better, no slips, but noticed the burning rubber smell again and was once again pulling right. After 30 min test drive, power was very sluggish again... seemed to run hot again.

Sorry for the novel, but I got nothing here. Any thoughts are appreciated.
