98 TJ won't start

I have a 98 jeep wrangler tj 2.5. Battery died on it so i jumped it and drove it with now problems. When i got home i put it into the garage and put a charger on it over night. Went to start it the next morning and it was dead as can be, so i went and bought a new battery and then it would just crank with no fire and the fuel pump would not kick on. So then i checked all fuses and grounds and all were good. I then replaced the crank positioning sensor and still did not fix it. I then replaced the ECM and that made my fuel pump start working again but still no fire???? any other ideas?

Sounds like you are shotgun trouble shooting.

First thing to find out. Is it a fuel problem or a spark problem.

Easy way to figure out is to shoot starting fuild in it and try to start. If it sounds like or does start. Then you have a fuel problem. If it doesn't do anything you have a spark problem.

I tried that and it just cranks I pulled the wire off the top of the distributor cap and grounded it to the frame and didn't get any spark

I would pull the distributor cap and check the rotor.

Are you getting any codes, IE check engine light. Sometimes pending codes wont triger a light.

Other things that you can check is the cam position sensor. It is in the distributor under the rotor.

But if you are getting no spark at all you might have a bad coil. (I have had mine fail on me during a drive)

Its the coil. I had the same code.

Yep, sounds like the coil to me as well.

So you think it's the ignition coil?

I used a test light on the wire going into the ignition coil and it had no power

I don't think you can use a test light to check the wires on a coil.

Easiest thing buy one from autozone or wherever and plug it in. You don't have to mount it. And try to start the jeep. If it doesn't start return the coil and say its the wrong size.

I have the same issue on an 04 2.5L. Not getting voltage to the coil. Trying to figure out where to trace it back to? Bad PCM is a possible cause. Hoping it’s more simple.
