Hi everyone! I figured I'd start a build thread now that I'm going to start getting some work done to the Jeep before winter.

Like the title says, I want to build a Jurassic Park inspired overland/adventure rig out of my Jeep.
These are my inspirations for the kind of look I'm going for in the end.

It might not be everyones taste, but seeing Jurassic Park as a kid is what made me fall in love with Jeeps so, here I am lol
I bought my 2000 Jeep TJ in July, it's a 5-speed with the 4.0. It has a 2" lift (maybe?), it had a Rough Country sticker on the windshield and it has 31's with no rub so I'm guessing at 2". That's really the only mod done to the Jeep other than the Ford rims. It came with a hard top and a soft top that is worse for wear, but it worked fine enough for this summer.

So here's what I'm starting with the day I bought it.

I really haven't done a whole lot with it since I bought it. I've been off work for medical reasons so I took the summer to just enjoy the Jeep as it was while doing a couple minor things just to keep the itch scratched a little lol

The fender flares were gross so they got redone. I used Matte Camo Black and it turned out pretty good IMO. I also bought a can of color match paint and sprayed the black diamond plating to match.
Before on the flares

This was the last time it was cleaned up with the ragged soft top before putting the hard top on.

I also re-dyed the padding for my roll bar covers. My picture for this is absolutely terrible so I apologise. The padding is still dirty from the last trip out but it gives you a good idea of the contrast between old and re-dyed.

And other than some minor maintenance here and there I haven't had to do a whole lot to the Jeep. Which given my employment status right now is a major plus lol

My first plans are all priority based which means no fun stuff yet.
Before winter hits and the salt starts flying I need:
-Passenger side floor pan
- Passenger side body mount repaired
- New rubber
- Some surface rust repairs on the tub.

Now for all the stuff that comes after lol
- I want to replace the lift to a new 2.5"reason one being my intentions to upgrade the suspension as much as possible, my goal is to make the most comfortable cruising TJ I possibly can haha, but also because my ride quality right now is crap and I think a lot of it is to do with the old suspension, and right now I have no clue what lift is even in it so it would be nice to know everything I have.
- Winch
- Half doors
- Sahara seat swap
- Lightbar with fog lights
- I do a lot of backroad and field driving at night so I'd like to get a pair of spotlights to mount up near the windshield
- Install sound deadening under the carpet
- CB & antenna
- Rear fogs
- Rugged ridge dash tray
- And of course the JP paint job lol

There's probably a lot of little stuff I'm forgetting and lots of big stuff that will pop up along the way, but that's the gist of where I'm headed. I don't do much rock crawling, like at all. A lot of back roads and mountain trails, coast line drives. I do a lot of photography, hiking, and camping, so the Jeep is going to be getting a lot of good use, hopefully lol

Here are just some random pictures of it taken over the summer

This was my first 2+hr drive in the Jeep and the first time using it for anything lol

I'll try to update as much as I can! Tomorrow the hurricane hits so the Jeep will get a pretty good test come then, fingers crossed lol

I look forward to following your build. Stay safe with the hurricane coming!

I haven't seen many TJs done up with the Jurassic Park colors so I'm looking forwards to seeing how your build pans out!

Got a start today on everyones favorite, rust repair!! I took the carpets out to get a good look at what I'm dealing with.

And oh my lanta is it worse than I thought. I knew of a couple holes on the passenger side, and a body mount. Well that would've been nice lol

This is the passenger side and it's about what I was expecting
69622898_1113325682197603_4398991008772128768_n.jpg

Drivers side is about what I was expecting, still no worries
70120629_2378947142365513_8562956102822526976_n.jpg

The first annoyance, a previous owners idea of patching a floor  Ive got nothing against using rivets to put in a patch, but this is not how it's done.
70192353_612788839250842_5077718273877868544_n.jpg

And this is where I started wanting to cry a lil bit lol Turns out the drivers side underneath is by far the nastiest spot. Also a shout out to my 5yr old helper today. He tells me sticks work great to see if stuff is broken lol
71094043_370465993889380_5090061034928996352_n.jpg

And of course one final blow just to really send it all home lol
69982067_839285393132804_2807066873772900352_n.jpg

But hey the rear is pretty solid other than some surface rust I can hit with some sandpaper and primer. So that's a silver lining, I guess? lol
70183721_2184126705229974_6636536349987962880_n.jpg

But I guess that's what happens when I vehicle lives it's life next to the ocean and spends every winter driving on roads covered in salt.

I know for a lot of people this would be enough to cut their losses and toss it all. Buuuut that's not really an option for me, I've brought worse back from the dead and I'm not looking to put this baby in Sema, solid, water tight, and rust free is all I need.

So the game plan:
I'm doing chemo treatments rn and still off work so full floor pans are not in the budget, Right now the plan is to seperate the tub from the frame and cut out and replace the rust on the floor, the frame will go off to a guy in town who does amazing framework, then we'll put them back together.

Then I want to spray the entire tub with a bedliner or something similar, then some sound deadending, and while the carpets are out I'll steam clean them and re-dye them with the same stuff I used for my roll bar covers

It worked great on the roll bar covers so hopefully I'll have good results with the carpet as well.

Wish me luck!! lol

I’m right there with you on Jurassic Park. I absolutely love those YJs. I was so stoked when I saw it in Jurassic Wold too.

Hi, neighbour!

haha Howdy fellow maritimer!!

I’m excited to see yours, I ran across this one last year when registering my car. More inspiration :)

I love seeing a TJ with this scheme more than I do the YJ's. Blasphemy to the JP die hards but still lol
What flares are those? They're huge! I thought about going to the deep rivet style flares but not sure how it would look with the JP look.

You’ve got a huge job with all that damage underneath. Make it safe to drive then start on your themed Jeep. Good luck. Here’s some more inspiration.

It's gonna be a huge job for sure but I dunno, maybe its the way I was raised or the area but the floor doesn't worry me one bit. That's an easy fix, stressful, annoying, and still a lot of work, but pretty straight forward as far I'm concerned. Make it solid and water tight for the winter, and then budget permitting replaced with new floor pans next summer. But we all grew up fixing our own gear and doing our own work after destroying our off road rigs. Motor and transmission swaps were just considered getting ready for the weekend haha

The frame damage is the only part that really worries me, my line of thinking right now for the arches is to cut out that entire section and weld new in. But my knowledge when it comes to frame work and structure is diddly so that might not even be a viable option. There's 1 gfuy here in town that everyone goes to for framework, he's specializes in frame work and metal fabrication and his shop has been opened for longer than most people can remember so hopefully he'll be able to sort me out.

I'm really looking forward to following your build. You've got your work cut out for you, but I'm a huge fan of Jurassic Park and Jeeps in that style. It is indeed a bit of heresy to do this with a TJ instead of a YJ, but I still think that it works. It also looks like you have some beautiful space around you to take some pics when it's done to give it a JP-looking surrounding.

Good luck, bud!

Thanks! As an extra "side project" once the build is done, I want to start converting some of the interior to a YJ to make it that much more screen accurate. YJ half doors can be modded to fit so that's do-able and easier to find around here anyway, and I'm sure it wouldn't be too much of a job to put in some YJ Sahara seats, and maybe a YJ center console.

It looks pretty slick, not sure on the flares. They look even bigger than the Rubicon ones

A lazy Saturday means lazy projects.

Decided to clean and get the first coat of dye on the carpets while they're out.

There's probably a proper way of doing this but I just soaked the carpet sections in a tub of water and Dawn dish soap for a few hours, and then scrubbed them inside the tub, took them out and then rinsed and dried.

Before
69973575_681076755691749_4482445539048161280_n.jpg

After next to some of the original carpet before they got dyed.
70832122_484362239087314_8474497759552995328_n.jpg

Now I'll just let them dry and then go back out and apply another light coat and call it 'good enough' for the day.

Tomorrow I'm taking the Jeep to my buddies garage so we can have a good look over the whole thing and get a start on the rust by the end of the month.

This latest round of chemo is kicking my ass so not much has gotten done on the Jeep. In a few days it'll be going up in the garage and we'll start cutting out all the rust and doing the body work so a couple more weeks and it'll be solid again.

The only things I've done lately are replace the hard top bolts, and I finished getting the interior carpet dyed and ready to go back in.

Really pleased with the Dupli Color fabric paint. I'm sure there are some guys with sticks up their butts that it isnt the factory color match but IMO its a great way to bring some life back to your carpets without breaking the bank.
