That explains why all I had to reference was my Haynes manual! Not that that was a bad thing, I used it to rebuild my 231. I'm thankful that you stood it up and created this community!
As someone who used to frequent the other Jeep forums I saw the way they were headed once the owners sold out to Vertical Scope. I wasn't going to let that happen. Those guys systematically ruined so many once good forums.
Same website just the 3rd Gen section.
I'd actually joined that forum due to having a 5.2 Magnum swapped into my TJ...

I started out on Wranglerforum in 2014. It was a pretty active forum then and had an active CO subthread.
THen I moved onto Jeepforum since there was a bit more technical info there. That forum is all but dead now.
Came here in 2018 I think, one of the most active forums I've been on. The layout is nice too - its similar to garagejournal

There were two Belly Dance forums, a medium sized one and a HUGE one. Both were very active. The HUGE one was killed by Facesuck and closed down. That gave the medium one a boost that lasted several years, but it too became a victim of facesuck. I'm probably the only Belly Dancer on the planet that isn't on that damn site.
There's few things I hate more than Facesuck and Meta.
Facesuck banned me permanently for selling gun parts on Marketplace. Good riddance!
I've heard nothing but nasties about Vertical Scope and a couple of others. What do they do to a forum they buy? They must be idiots to invest money in one and then kill it.
There was a firearms forum run by the mfg of one niche brand, a pretty good one. The mfg apparently got bought out, the forum was upgraded into un-usability, and everything was banned except discussions about the mfg's firearms. That makes some sense on the surface of it, but it killed the soul of the forum. That plus a completely unreadable font. We all left.
Another forum was run by a firearms magazine. It was damn good, but they got tired of it I guess and closed it down. One of the members started a replacement, and we're still there! Not quite as good as it was in the "good ol days", but not bad.
But the worst are piano forums. I was on three of them for awhile - absolutely horrible people on the whole. Flame wars unlike any I've ever seen elsewhere. On top of that, all of them were entirely too Liberal, even when they stuck to piano discussions. I stop in at one of them once in a blue moon, the same 20 or so flaming Libtards are still there...
But otherwise, I've found pretty decent forums about a wide array of subjects, and they're all thriving more or less - except Belly Dance as previously mentioned.
I don't think it's just that they buy a forum. That alone isn't enough to kill a forum. What kills it is that Vertical Scope is a corporation and much like any corporate takeover, their main priority is increasing revenue. The forums that I see that still last are ones that are stewarded over by people who genuinely care. People who are active in the community and actually put effort into making the place better. When your only real concern is revenue that sort of falls apart. That's what I witnessed over the years as many forums I used to frequent got bought out and then subsequently ruined.
Gotta love what you do for a living, right? I mean you don't have to, but if you do you'll run the company or do the job much better than the person who couldn't care less.
Piano forums, huh? I wouldn't have guessed, but when I consider some of the "piano types" it does sort of make sense. Not all of them of course, but you know what I mean.
I frequent a bass forum (TalkBass) for bass players and it's another very good forum that's stayed good over decades. It's still run by the same people that started it in the 90s and it's still very active. Very great bunch of folks too! There's also a Chevy forum I visit as well which is also very nice.
Good forums still exist, they just aren't as common as they once were. You can always tell which ones were bought out by Vertical Scope. The moment I land on a forum I almost instantly know if it's privately owned or corporately owned. All the guys who have tried to buy me out are large companies.
Yep - the only thing I hate worse than facesuck and similar is the device that brings that sewage into most people's pockets. The last "social media" type site I was involved with at all was something called "Tribe". I didn't like it, I was there for a semi-active male Belly Dancers forum. When MySpace came out, I looked at it, didn't see much point to it as it was kinda-sorta the spiritual successor to GeoCities (Which I tried back in the day), AngleFire, etc. Facesuck pissed me off before they even were a thing, back when they were limited to 3 or 4 college campuses. Some idiot there linked to my site claiming to be me - something I take seriously and get shut down. Facesuck didn't respond to my queries, so I just blocked the link. Hard to claim to be me when your link is blocked with a nasty message. 22+ years later, I see no reason whatsoever to rescind my policy.
Speaking of shutdowns of people trying to impersonate me, I once had a similar situation from a website in Germany. The post was in English, but not much else was. So I reached out to a dance sister in Switzerland, she took care of it for me - IIRC the guy got kicked off the thing. The Belly Dance Sisterhood is a thing, we take care of our own.
Another time some guy on a football forum did something similar. So I joined the forum myself, and had some fun!
The worst downfall I've ever seen was personal to me. I'm an actuary and there was a forum for actuaries called the actuarialoutpost. Years ago the largest recruiting firm for that career bought the rights to the website and proceeded to run it into the ground. The worst thing they did was completely destroy all of the forum's historical posts. We are talking at least 10 maybe 20 years worth of posts. Of course the forum had the NSFW/non-actuarial sections but the vast majority of the forum was dedicated to job listings, career advice, exam advice, professionalism etc. It makes me sick just thinking about all the information destroyed. There is technically a website still out there but it's a shell of it's former self.
I've had a number of people impersonate me online over the years as well. Never understood why they would have picked me of all the countless numbers of people online. Much like yourself, I reported those profiles to Facebook and they always came back at me saying that they couldn't find anything against their standards.
Facebook is one of those things where people try to make excuses to justify their continued use of a platform run by a spineless, disgusting, reprehensible human being (Zuckercuck) who doesn't give two shits about you, me, or our country.
I get it, we've got to pick and choose. Just about every big company these days is evil. Facebook for me though seems like an easy one to eliminate from your life. They provide nothing in return for stealing your data, spying on you, and screwing over your country. But, "I use it to keep in contact with family and share photos!". Yeah, that's what email is for, dumbass.
Sorry, I just despise Zuckercuck so, so much.
