Are 4.11's a consideration here?

I also just swapped to disks from a drum 35 to a disk 44. Is it nice to have, ya. Would I have paid and swapped 2 axles just for a lunch box locker and rear disks on a 35, absolutely not.

I don’t see where it says the axle in the pair has a lunchbox. I see Detroit LSD, which can be a nice choice depending on use case scenarios.

Sorry I took post #11 as an assumption that this set had them in the front. If they don’t that’s all more the reason to not get a set of axles for the only benefit of being disk breaks over what he currently has.

Post 11 was him asking if a front lunchbox locker would be okay to install after Jerry recommended one.

Again, it depends on use case scenario. A Detroit LSD is a $5-700 purchase in most cases. If this guy wanted one of those by chance, that adds to the value of the pair.

Personally I don't think his idea of buying the axles and regearing them deeper is a bad choice at all. I wouldn't buy those axles to run them as is but to buy them and get them to deeper gearing I think they are a solid choice, and the disc brake swap is a nice added improvement to get as part of the deal for cheap.

I guess this is what I get for assuming... I just ran my vin and verified that my TJ sport has a stock Dana 44 (rear) with LSD. I can't believe I almost jumped into this one. thought these were unicorns!

Looks like gears are next!

I am running 33x12.5's. Dana 30 & 44. 5spd / 4.0.

I had 3.73's and hated it. Always felt like I was in the wrong gear and 5th was useless. Downshifts were annoying at best.

Thought long and hard about 4.56 vs 4.88. Decided on 4.56 because the likelihood of going to 35's is near zero. I did TruTrac LSD but skipped the chromoly shafts because of the decision to stay on 33's. I have ZERO regrets. In fact, regearing to 4.56's and a B&M Short Shifter remain tied for my number one mods. Totally different animal to drive. I'll call it perfect. Upshifts and downshifts are always spot on. Rev matching is a breeze. I can be on a long uphill in 5th and just step on it.. and it goes. I was concerned 1st would be too short.. it's not. 4H or 4L and the gearing still feels spot on.

4.10's never entered the equation.

Took all of five minutes of thought to rule out the chromoly shafts. Not needed for my driving.

FWIW, the rear disc brake conversion is really appealing. I don't think I would spend the money to do it, but if I were buying a set of axles that had them it would make me smile a little.

Can't wait to change gears. I am contemplating the same ratios.... I'm just jacked that I have a 44 rear!

I'm leaning that way. If I were to leave the stock Trak-Lok (probably rebuild) what gear set would I need? Does this fall into the thin/thick conversation?

No idea. All I know is that the deeper gearing makes the Jeep all around nicer to drive. 4.56 is not enough and never has been.

If you have 3.73, you would need to get a thick gearset to keep that stock traklok carrier.

I would recommend 4.88 as well, not 4.56. If any plans to go with 35’s, go with 5.13.

I don’t like my 4.10s on 33’s. It’s slightly less than tolerable, and I live where the only elevation changes are speed bumps. Hold out for 4.56 or 4.88.

It's all perspectives and expectations. I went from a Dana 35 with 3.07s to a Dana 44 with 3.73 and I love it. I'm at 8,500 feet of elevation and drive mountain passes everyday. With the 3.73, I can use 4th gear coming up Ute Pass and actually pass other traffic. Couldn't do that before because I was always winding out 3rd gear at ~45mph. Granted, I'm on 32" tires that actually only measure 31.25" so I know with 33s or bigger, the 3.73 is probably terrible. Anyway, I can't imagine racing around here with 4.56s or 4.88s on my 1999 4.0.....I'd be trying to drag race. LOL.

how much use do you get out of 5th gear?
