Are Grade 8 bolts overkill for the front bumper?

Lots of obsessing over nothing in this thread. On the bright side, things are so good in the US that we can spend crazy amounts of time arguing over trivial stuff that really isn’t that important.

For my $2 (inflation…what’s a penny?), I use grade 8 whenever possible but if not available for whatever reason, I’ll use grade 5. I use stainless bolts and nuts for anything non strength critical. Don’t use stainless for anything that needs to be strong!

Don’t over think it. Many people never even take their Jeeps out of the parking lot so those people could use stainless or below grade 5 and never have an issue.

It isn't obsessing. It is instead the desire to have the correct information out there for folks to use to make an informed decision and correct fallacies like yours about stainless. Using "stainless" generically to indicate a weak non-structural fastener is just as fallacious as grouping all other steel fasteners as being Gr. 2 or less. It simply isn't true. I use a lot of structural stainless fasteners. They aren't cheap, but there are a lot of them out there.

You seem to suffer from the same comprehension handicap that is affecting Jerry. Putting the truth out there is not being done due to anyone with hurt feelings, it is being done because it is the truth and no other reason. If you think knowing the truth and using that to make an informed decision is silly, you might be a fuckwit.

I use grade 5 for the winch. Hopefully the bolts fail before anything gets twisted on the Jeep. My understanding is it's a circuit breaker of sorts. Grade 8 on my bumper and most importantly my tow hook locations. I use antiseize on all of them and check torque frequently.

As an aside...bumper and M8000 winch are coming off shortly...winch needs another trip to Clackamas for warranty repair...time for motor #3. Bought a new 9.5 XP...if the M8000 gets repaired it'll go on my wife's JK to replace her HF winch.

All I can say is that if there's any obsessing going on anywhere, checking torque frequently
may be it. It's alright though, that's gotta be better than forgetting to torque them to begin with
