Are these high idle temperatures normal?

That works, and I've done it to improve my AC when idling here in AZ and Vegas.

But, if he's at 225* now, then it's likely going to be higher once it's 30* to 40* hotter outside. We can't mess around in this climate, so the system needs to be running correctly.

This shows his cooling system isn't a problem at idle , it's a problem all the time.

I agree with that.

But since it's only overheating in idle with the AC on that logically points to some items in the system over others. I would be looking at the fan (is it in the correct direction), fan clutch, and the radiator (my money would be on the radiator not cooling enough).

I don't believe a failing water pump or a closed TS would be only showing issues in idle with the AC on.

I know it!!!

But that doesn't help my Jeep cool off when I'm idling. Dealt with this last Moab, and I don't even have AC. I think I still might have to figure out why it is/was doing it but hard to test right now.

Add an extra heat exchanger to the heater hoses , or have a custom bigger radiator built. I can't believe all these hot idle issues are only a Jeep problem.

There is something there to be fixed for me, it is a new issue. I had 0 issues with my cooling system for years until the trip to Moab last year. I think I saw it do it after installing the new fan clutch but I hardly drove it after until winter. I am taking ideas from this thread but I am not quite "lost" on what to do to fix it.

I need to collect a few empty milk jugs to do it though, now that I'm on a well/septic 🤣 my dumbass forgot to rinse out the first like 8 I saved and so I had to restart..... I wasn't opening those back up.

What did it do with the " old " fan clutch ? Is the new clutch built in Mexico or China ?

Temp started creeping up at idle, figured it was a clutch. Replaced clutch, IIRC it still was creeping. I don't doubt the clutch, just my decision to replace it. The heavy duty clutch definitely seems to cool my engine way more on the highway, guessing it's more for vehicles with AC+trans cooler+PS cooler types, while I have nothing but radiator.

I'm thinking it's probably gunk in the radiator that I can solve with a flush and removing petcock. But we'll see!!

If that doesn't work stop screwing around , Kenworth solve this issue decades ago with twin radiators on severe duty mid east oil field trucks.

What clutch are you running? I currently have the Hayden 2971 installed (others run the thinner 2771).

Only have it because I was chasing down a noise issue and thought it was the clutch at one point. I’ll swap the Mopar unit back in unless I do the 2018 Camaro fan mod.

I have the 2737. I think that is between the basic and extra HD one if I remember right?

Nice, I didn’t know about that one. I made the decision to get the 2971 after discovering this thread and seeing that it looks similar to the Mopar. No idea if it works any better or worse than what you have or the 2771.

My system was pretty rusty when I bought the vehicle, so I do a thermocure flush about once a year. I’m currently running a higher ratio of coolant to see if it helps reduce the corrosion (and sufficiently cools).

The biggest cooling improvement came after I used the water/air gun to flush trash out of the system. I filled up about 20 totes with flushed water and bits were still coming out. About half way through the process, a bunch of nastiness was set free from the heater core causing the water to look it was round 1.

Nice I did read you mention that earlier. I think I will have to try it since it seems like that's probably my issue. I have done the thermocure flush (or I used prestone's version) and back flush and got a lot out but that sounds promising.

My problem is figuring out what to do with the coolant. AutoZone and etc don't take coolant, which sucks lol. At my last house the water dept just said to dump it down the sink and run the water for a while to dilute it

You might check out your county website , the county I worked for had coolant recycling at their transfer station.

Good idea. Thank you! The real hard part is collecting enough containers to cart it all off when I'm done without spending a bunch of money 🤣

Buy some cheap water at the grocery store in gallon jugs.

Buy water?? In plastic jugs??? Instead of my amazingly delicious well water?????

I'll just wait til I go through enough milk 🤣 I love milk it won't take all that long. As long as I remember to rinse them.

I replaced my 2771 with 2971. It started to run much better at idle.
Then I replaced my fan, and it started to run way better. The 6 blade fan with 2971 is a winning combo, maybe a little bit noisier than usual.

I've read that the 2771 seems to be hit and miss for folks. By saying it ran much better, does that mean it dropped your ECTs and AC temps in idle on brutally hot summer days?

If I purchase anything else, it will likely be the 2018 Camaro fan and temp controller that @Steel City 06 shared about since it appears to move way more air than the 5 blade, 6 blade, 18", and 19" fan set ups. Unfortunately, I broke some expensive stuff on my rig so I never did the mod like I had planned.

I would do this mainly so the fan isn't on when it doesn't need to be on, and to see if it improves my AC and ECTs when sitting in idle or in heavy traffic on a 115*+ day. Improving the AC would be nice for my dog when there isn't much air flow.

I used to have temperatures creeping to post 210 the moment that I would stop and idle, really fast. That was with stock fan and 2771.
Then I upgraded to 2791 with stock fan, and it started to creep way slower, meaning that the temperature creep would not in 3-4 minute idling.
Then I upgraded to 2791 + 6 blade fan, and it takes a while to cross 210F during Houston heat and idling. It moves much more air, so cools much better.
Total cost of the 6 blade plus clutch was less than 150$, I installed them myself. I would say that it should have come like this stock from the factory.
