I haven't done it, but from reading several stories of folks who have, it's an easy conversion. I would do it but my Polk 4x6's are only 1-year old. I got on the forum just after I did my stereo setup. Frankly, it's the only mod I did without coming on here that I don't regret, although I probably would have done the 5.25" conversion if I'd known about it at the time, it still sounds awesome. Audiophiles will tell you to go with a round speaker over an oval one any day of the week. So I'd go with the 5.25". But hopefully someone with actual hands on experience will chime in...
Here's the 5.25" Polk in the dash with the adapter plate from Crutchfield. There is a 1" wide metal strap that you will need to cut and bend to make room for this size speaker. It's not difficult and you'll see exactly what you need to do when you remove the existing speaker. One cut with a mini hack saw, one bend of the strap, and you'll be good to go.
I also put the same 5.25" Polk speakers in the sound bar. I originally installed 6.5" Polk speakers (which fit without modifications in a 2000), but they were way too loud compared to the front and I didn't like having to fade some of the sound back to the front. I used those 6.5" in my Civic and bought another set of 5.25". I like the balance much better now.

Nice. Sounds pretty easy. I'm going to order up a set, maybe 2 of the 5.25 for the dash and sound bar.
Still deciding between 5.25 and 6.5 for the sound bar.. I like loud music but the main reason I need some good dash speakers is when the lady rides with me she likes the windscreen up behind the driver/passenger seats which basically cuts out any sound from the soundbar speakers.. Hopefully replacing the front speakers with the 5.25 will be a good upgrade...

Be sure to click that because it has details that help you, and links to parts you might need, the parts are usually free or dirt cheap. In any case it is worth a click.

Wow, best price I've seen on those. I paid $80 from Crutchfield when I bought mine.
what about the roll bar? Was thinking these:

I've seen some installs with component speakers in the roll bar, where the tweeter was mounted along side the woofer. They look good, but I can't attest to their sound quality.
I personally used the same 5.25" Polk DB522 in both the dash and sound bar. Mostly for ease of install and lower cost.
Either way will be an improvement. Remember though, the factory pods are just an empty, lightweight plastic box. Don't expect much bass reproduction from them.
I have a factory sub soon to be replaced with a powered 8"...for the rollbar would it makes sense to use baffles there as well? even with fiberfill?

You have been led in a good direction . Here’s the baffles I used and the easy connect wiring harness, but you could and I would suggest you get a size smaller of the baffle if using them. The sound is much improved, but does not meet my 21yr olds standard of a boomin system. You can see for yourself and expand after that point . Good luck,
So Kathy, you would suggest the 2" deep baffle over the 3.5" deep for the dash? you also stuffed polyfill in the baffle?
Would just polyfill be okay in both the dash and sound bar? Or would you recommend the baffles as well...?
I’m not sure of the measurements of the one I had but am guessing it was the 3.5. The jeep expert/ audio shop owner said the smaller would be better but they were out of stock and I didn’t want to wait. Once I installed the baffle(with polyfil inside), I had a bad vibration in the bass . We figured out that the baffle was touching one of the metal brackets causing just enough to effect the sound. Once we fanagled the bracket and baffle to not touch, the vibration went away. So I would suggest the smaller size .
I put just polyfil in the sound bar and that space worked well to keep it more compact. However in the dash, there is more space and I felt that the baffle helped contain the polyfil therefore feeling like it would achieve the outcome better. The baffles were fairly cheap if I recall like 3-5 bucks.
