Automatic shifter moves freely

I have a 2003 wrangler x and the transmission works perfectly fine but the automatic shifter moves freely into Park, reverse, and drive without pressing the shift button with Jeep is on. It will also move when the keys is not in the ignition.

The only thing I can think of that would allow that is the detent tab linkage is frozen in the shifter handle base or fell off. You need to pull the shift indicator bezel and push the release button a few times to see if the detent tab is moving. Sounds like it is stuck down. You can see the detent rail from the right side and the tab that locks into them to stop the shifter at certain points.

Alternately, pop the shifter handle off with a firm yank upward inline with tube. Maybe someone repaired the broken bead rod with something that got stuck.

X2, that's what I'm thinking. Jsx, the handle does not pull off easily. Shift into Lo so you get a better angle on it then give it a firm pull. There's nothing holding it in place except friction.

The white plastic rod commonly breaks, the chopstick shown is just what some have used as a replacement.

When the rod breaks, you can't get it out of park, he has the opposite problem.

I agreed which is why I said X2. I just added the rod also commonly breaks and wanted to show what it looks like and what some have used to replace it with.

I want to resurrect this post as my 04 has a similar problem. Only difference is I have to push the button on my shifter for it to move but the ignition switch doesn’t have to be on. You don’t even have to have the key in it to put it in any position. Any ideas? This hasn’t been a big problem as it’s been garage kept but I just sold my house so it has to sit outside for a while
