What battery brand is recommended these days? I’ve heard that Optima batteries are not what they used to be. True or just one disgruntled customer? Other brands?

Went this route after my sears diehard platinum died after 9 years. It sucks they don’t make that battery anymore. Even ran my winch in the side posts with no issues.
It really depends if you are running a winch or have a lot of accessories. You can run the odyssey down without killing it. If you are stock you are probably fine with the high end Napa brands.

I got a Duralast 34-AGM from AutoZone, works fine and the price was right. Avoid the Optima, I think the quality issues are real. Cheap AGM is the way for me. I bet the Odessy batteries are better, I just didn't want to pay to find out.
Edit: I've had two yellow tops and the first lasted awhile but the second failed early. That's what my Optima opinion is based on.

I am running the AMG from O'Reilly's also for over a year and no issues what so ever

I’ve had two yellow Optima batteries go udders up in the last year they were both less than two years old. Enough for me, I’ll run anything other than Optima.
I run a Duracell 34/78 AGM, also manufactured by East Penn in the good ol’ US of A. I’ve jumped more vehicles than I can count. I’ve also toyed with my winch a few times with the vehicle running and it hardly dropped my alternator voltage. Very powerful battery.
You’re wanting to stay away from batteries manufactured by Johnson Controls, the largest battery manufacturer in the world. Made in Mexico. Quality control sucks. Reason Optima no better than any other.

NorthStar X2. They manufacture a lot of the name brands.
Get a Group 24, not a Group 34. A Group 24 is taller by an inch and has larger capacity. No modifications needed to fit it.
If you can, get one of the NorthStar batteries with combination automotive and marine terminals. Makes connections a breeze

Ran a diehard platinum for 6 years it should have been replaced after 5 but I tried to push it. It was regularly hooked up to a charger as the jeep isn't a dd but for the money, I don't the the oddesy is worth it. Get something cheaper with a good warranty. Up here in Canada the best bet seems to be a Kirkland agm from Costco.

Wow! Thanks for all of the recommendations! It sounds like there are multiple options. Just stay away from Optima.

Pepboys has good deals on batteries also. I put one of their Champion AGM batteries in my Mercedes and have had no issues in the last year. It’s a “weekend” car so it sits for a week or two at a time and never skips a beat.
They have their AGM battery for $160 minus the $18 core charge, puts you at $142. Also has 4yr free replacement warranty which was better than anything else I could find.
