Will I need to upgrade the rear bumper/tire holder on my 98 TJ to mount a 33x12.5x15 tire? The tire weight is listed as 52lbs without the 15" steel wheel. I want to run a spare, but I don't want to damage the bumper/holder.

IMO, a 33 inch tire can fit on the tailgate, but I prefer to mount any spare tire over a 31 inch on a bumper mounter tire carrier. Or mounted in the rear of the tub, standing upright, if a backseat is absent.

Two different things. You can either upgrade the tire carrier with heavy duty hinges, or upgrade the bumper with one that has a swing out tire carrier separate from the tailgate.
If you stay with the tailgate carrier, make sure to readjust the snubbers to keep the tire from shaking.

For the price of the Morryde tailgate reinforcement ($360) I am close to a Dirtworx bumper ($406). Is there any cheaper yet equally effective solution?

I like the Moryde for the cost and the functionality. I did the hinges only and for a year and a half have been fine with it. I even scraped the tire a few times on steep drops. About $150 for hinges only.

Leaving it stock will ruin your tailgate and hinges

If hinges alone are enough to carry the weight of the new tire I will go that route. Did not realize I could purchase the hinges by themselves. Thanks all!

If you ever want the rest of the Moryde system you can just call them. Also, as someone mentioned, you’ll need to adjust the snubbers so the tire is firmly against them. There’s no standard answer since we run different tires with wheels having variant backspacing

Not a fan of bumper mounted tire carriers. The better solution in my mind is a body mounted tire carrier such as the Exogate / MORryde, or the Bestop tire carrier.

Bumper mounted ones are a pain in the ass if you ask me.

Exogate/Moryde will save you a usually overlooked issue of having to open both the swing out and the tailgate. I have a swing out and it just became a pain. The exogate I have now is extremely beefy (holds my 35” tire right) and is easy to use.

Help me understand the issues with bumper mounted swing outs...

Is it the shitty hinge that I see often?

Is the Dirtworx or any other reputable brands built with poor quality?

I agree with the others, I've never seen a bumper mounted spare tire carrier I would install. Having just one main support/pivot point is not my idea of a good design for something as heavy as a big Jeep-size spare tire and wheel can be. If it was me and I didn't already have the OR-Fab tub-mounted carrier I'd go with either the Exogate or Moryde.

There’s this beast of a hinge which utilizes a 3” housing combined with a 1-3/8” inner billet shaft. Which is supported by genuine Timken roller bearings and races.

My old swing out used a trailer hub for the hinge. That was the best part of it. The main bumper and carrier frame was big enough that I never worried about the hinge itself being what failed. It was the tire mount itself that began to crack. The whole thing was heavy to begin with. Everything I did to address the shaking and cracking only added to the weight. I gave up on it and went the opposite direction, just short of abandoning the spare.

That's not the problem area so far as I'm concerned, it's where that post gets attached to the bumper. This photo illustrates the main issue I see... where the post attaches to the bumper itself.

Right, care to elaborate who makes that bumper, or where its made?

Any more pics of another bumper, possibly built by dirt works or another reputable brand having this same issue...?
