Can't find the correct blower motor switch for my 97 TJ?

So i recently bought a 97 TJ - the only thing that wasn't working was the blower fan which only worked on 1 speed. I immediately suspected the blower motor resistor was out and it was so i replaced it and the harness that plugs into it. I was very careful to mark the order of the wires from the old harness and double checked to make sure i had it correct, soldered the connections and closed it up. Still didn't work - i did get more speeds but they were out of sequence. So i suspected the switch was bad. I got one from NAPA - it was only a 3 speed switch, ordered one from JC Whitney and it was a 3 speed switch. Ordered one from Quadratech after seeing their description and Q&A - which assures that it's a 4 speed switch, got it today and it's a 3 speed switch as well. Anyone got any insight or experience with this problem? I need a 4 speed switch - my TJ does have factory air conditioning.

No part number on the switch, just INDAK PAT. NO. 3 159 722. A search has something similar on eBay but not the same

Another early 97 TJ owner said he had the same issue and the dealership said no longer available.
The one on eBay has 5 spades and yet a different shaft.

Can a switch be rebuilt? We are in TX and need the AC

My 97 was mfg 5/96 and I had the same issue. I never did find the correct switch, but in my case the resistor and resistor harness plug replacement fixed the problem. People on this site have mentioned that there were some electrical carry overs from the 95 YJ but a blower motor switch for a YJ wasn’t right either as I recall.

I can buy a later harness from the resistor to the switch and went with the newer switch?

Pretty sure my early 97 switch is a CJ switch in different case (J5462784)

I am thinking I can open the tabs and swap the housing out see the pics to compare, both are 4 connectors and the configuration looks the same

Any thoughts?

Any reason I can't bend the tabs back on both, swap the boards then bend the tabs back down?

I did not, right now running without the high blower working. I need to find a way of breaking the CJ switch open without destroying, or figure out how to rewire that the switch is on medium is actually blowing on high, in DFW if you need AC, you need ALL the AC.

I installed this today and it fit my plug and works. But the bolt didn’t line up on the correct side so the speeds are backwards.

I have problems with the harness as well so I’m missing speeds still but it’s better than nothing for now.

Also, the plastic arm doesn’t fit into the switch cover. It’s both too long to be flush and too narrow to make force to hold. Shortening it shouldn’t be a problem and you could put something behind the switch to give it the right friction that it holds.

I’m trying to find the right piece but for now at least my speeds are working in some ghetto rig capacity. It might be better for you than doing that CJ mod.

Edit: just reread your initial post. I am fairly certain this one is 4 speeds. It has 4 clickable stops but only 2 of them work for me, most likely because my harness melted as well. Finding that part seems even harder than the switch lol.

Surprised the YJ connector isn't right, that's what I thought it'd be. My TCase speedo adapter wasn't the expected one on my 97 but the YJ one was.

I'm surprised the YJ switch was not correct. My very early 3/96 1997 TJ used several YJ electrical parts, like the '95/96 YJ TPS that fit the connector where a '97 TJ TPS would not.

Please report back. I have a 97, so I am interested in what you find out.

Will do.

As for my melted wiring harness plug, my electrical engineer friend said you don't need to find the exact part and it's possible to just rebuild the connections or scrape off the burnt parts so it creates a connection again. I think worst case it's a cheap job for an electrical specialist.
