They share a bit in common, but the overall build and UI is nicer IMO. I worked Fire/EMS in the frack fields several years ago, and they decided to switch to Baofeng radios (because the company was cheap). While they impressed me in some ways, they left a lot to be desired. I've used them since, and they're great for what they are. But there's better options available these days for not a lot of difference in cost.
Yea, Baofeng's UI is almost as bad as a smartphone's.
Seriously, Baofeng is only usable because of CHIRP. I have two of them.

This guy can't even use a device my 7 year old can... I wouldn't weigh his opinion very heavily.
A lot of it is simply that nobody does usability studies anymore. We had multiple meetings and design reviews over usability issues back in the day. Simple things like the frequency of the "pleasant low tone" had scads of though put into them. Now, nobody gives a damn.
I'd expect my kids to struggle way more of that was the case. But this is nearly natural to them.
