In Drivers Ed when I took it in HS in Wisconsin they taught us how to pass. Here in California no one knows how to pass. All they know is multilane hwys and are at a total loss on a 2 lane country road. I’m the guy that uses his rearview mirrors constantly. Every trip out to the desert on 2 lane straight roads and I’m doing 10mph over the limit I see people coming up to me doing 20-30 over the limit. They invariably pull up on my tail and sit there. Straight road and no opposite traffic in sight. They just sit there until another car comes up and passes the both of is with one smooth move. Then it hits them that they can pass and when they finally do they honk at me and give me the one finger salute. All they had to do was turn the wheel a few degrees to the left coming up to me in the first place and be done.
Oh Goddess yes! I had this happen ALL the time when I lived in California. Some of them would get mad because I didn't pull over with my trailer - hey bud, its straight as an arrow with little traffic. If you're too damn stupid to pass, you can stay back there.
On our local mountain roads I will pull into a turn out, if it’s big enough, and let even one car pass me. By law here in Ca if you have more than 3 vehicles behind you on a mountain road you must use a turn out and let them by. It’s common courtesy but not so common here in Ca.
I always have done this too - except for the case noted above. They don't want to be behind me, and frankly I don't want them there either.

I've driven to Big Bear countless times. The number of folks who ignore the law about impeding traffic is astounding. I have never been up the mountain without encountering at least one and generally several. They are the worst of the worst in that they will stay below the recommended speed until the passing lanes and then speed up so you can't get around them.
Only to clarify, but when I read that law, I don't recall mountain roads being the condition and I thought the number was 5. It was a very long time ago and I've been traumatized by so many of those idiots it may have seriously affected the accuracy of my memory.
I looked it up you are correct the law states 5+ vehicles. People don’t stop for red lights or stop signs here so traffic laws don’t apply to them.
Years ago the Wife wanted to buy a place in Big Bear. That was a big No from me. We just take the FS roads to BB mid week and have a nice lunch. The mountain bikes are all I have to worry about when we get close to the top.

One Saturday I was all alone on a 4-5 lane section of highway and a young girl came blazing up behind me in the same lane and got right on my rear bumper. I disengaged cruise control and began gradually slowing down, and she stayed right behind me for quite a while before she realized we were going 20 below the speed limit and she changed lanes and went around me. What a doofus!
I can guaran-damn-tee it that 90% of the time when I see someone being REALLY stupid, the car has California plates. The other 10% would be Florididiots, and 99% of the simply "every day stupidity" would be Florididiots as well. Usually the Californian is simply in EVERYBODY'S way...
That's when I hit the brakes. Anyone that hits you from behind is automatically at fault for following too close. The decal on my work car pisses off tailgaters too.
