Hello all,
Looking for some help.
I took my TJ on a two hour drive one way this weekend, did great great cruising between 65-70 mph for 100+ miles. Upon reaching my destination, around three miles into a FS road, under load it suddenly sputtered and died as I'm driving up. Here are the following facts: ('98 TJ 4.0, 5spd, 235k miles) no codes, no check engine light, no leaks, no smells, everything is tight in the engine bay, newer battery, good charge, alternator is five years old, charging good, spark plugs are only 3-ish years old, distributor is two years old, top end rebuild 1.5 years ago, daily driver, idles great, strong healthy acceleration. No warning signs before this, other than one week ago I was driving and it bucked/sputtered briefly under load while gently cruising down the highway at 55-60 mph. I thought it was sediment in the gas tank or something, couldn't replicate it. From my symptoms, the internet says possible Crankshaft Position Sensor. Could it be a bad fuel pump? Bad fuel injector? Starter sounds fine, cranks and cranks and cranks but it appears to be getting zero spark. Doesn't even try to fire. I'm at a complete loss, again this is my DD, and for it to just suddenly give out without any signs or loud bangs is super confusing. Had to tow it home. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I would like to diag it before sending it to a shop. I would like to try to fix it myself, however I do not want to throw the parts cannon at it. I'm going to start taking things apart today to inspect further. Thanks.

Definitely need to get a gauge on that fuel rail and see what your pressure is at.

You could spray something flammable down the throttle body to see if it starts.

After that I'd be checking to see if you have voltage at the fuel pump connector.

Listen for the fuel pump when first keyed on. If you hear it for a moment, I'd change out the crankshaft position sensor. I've seen the crankshaft position sensor go bad under similar conditions on high mileage Jeep XJ's.

Spray some starting fluid in it. If it starts, you have a fuel problem. No start, no spark.

Noted. Wouldn't a CPS throw an engine code though? I am going to swap the horn relay with the fuel pump relay and see if it's something as simple as a fuse.

I'm using an Accel cap and rotor.

I only got about 15k miles out of mine. I have a lot of play on the distributor rotor and suspect that wiped things out.

I think a fresh distributor is only $70. Be warned some are 180 out.

I had to rotate the gear on my last one for the YJ.
